The theme of World Environment Day 2023 in India is Mission LiFE, which aims to encourage people to adopt sustainable lifestyle practices to protect the environment.
World Environment Day is celebrated annually on June 5th, and it is an occasion that brings together people from all over the world to take action for the environment. This year, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India has announced that World Environment Day 2023 will be celebrated with a focus on the Mission LiFE, which stands for Lifestyle for Environment. The aim is to encourage people to adopt sustainable lifestyle practices to protect the environment.
The concept of LiFE was introduced by the Prime Minister of India at the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow. He called for a global effort to adopt sustainable lifestyle practices, and since then, India has been mobilizing people to embrace LiFE.
To kick-start the Mass Mobilisation for Mission LiFE, the National Museum of Natural History in collaboration with the National Zoological Park organized an event on Waste Reduction. A PPT on waste management, demonstration, and interactive sessions were delivered by Dr. Meenakshi Karawal, Associate Professor, KIET Group of Institution, Ghaziabad. Participants were also encouraged to pledge to adopt LiFE actions.
Several other events were organized by Regional Offices of the National Museum of Natural History across the country. The RMNH, Mysore conducted a Mask Making Activity for students and the general public, emphasizing the need for an eco-friendly lifestyle and a green pledge.
The RGRMNH, Sawai Madhopur, organized an orientation on Mission LiFE, green talks on water pollution, saving water, the significance of marine ecosystems, and climate change. Exhibitions on Save Water, Marine Eco-System, and Climate Change were also held, and visitors enjoyed film shows and selfies.
The Zoological Survey of India also started a Mass Mobilisation for Mission LiFE, focusing on “Save Water” and “Say no to Plastics” to bring awareness among the youth. Dr. Dhriti Banerjee, Director, ZSI, gave a talk through virtual mode to about 100 young and enthusiastic youth participants.
The National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management (NCSCM) initiated the Mass Mobilization for Mission LiFE through a “Signature Campaign” and “Green Pledge” of LiFE practices. This event was a part of the World Bank Workshop on “Hydromet Service for Coastal, Agricultural, and Urban Resilience and Early Warning,” which aimed to learn from the best practices in coastal resilience. Participants took part in a green pledge and a signature campaign against littering and the need to live in harmony with nature.
