Introduction

The Bajaj Group has been a leading business house in India for more than 90 years. From automobiles to financial services and insurance, the Group has a diverse range of interests and has always been at the forefront of social responsibility. Despite its growth and success, the Group remains committed to the values of ethical business practices and social engineering that were instilled by its founder, Jamnalal Bajaj.

Founding Members – Pillars of Strength

Jamnalal Bajaj (1889 – 1942) founded the Bajaj Group in 1926 with the belief that “common good is more important than individual gain.” His philanthropic vision transformed into a conglomerate that is now respected and admired for its business practices and community development efforts. The Group’s focus on community development, healthcare, education, art, heritage, sports, and environmental conservation makes it more than just a corporate entity. It is a catalyst for social empowerment.

Over 90 Years in Business

With more than 40 companies and 36,000 employees worldwide, the Bajaj Group has come a long way since its founding. Despite its growth, the Group remains steadfast in its commitment to social responsibility and ethical business practices.

Shri Jamnalal Bajaj, over a century ago, a philanthropist instinctively took the unprecedented step of using business to serve society.. Known as the “Merchant Prince” by Mahatma Gandhi, his businesses were known for their quality, a direct result of his refusal to engage in unethical cost-cutting measures.

Kamalnayan Bajaj – The Expansionist

After the passing of Jamnalal, Kamalnayan Bajaj (1923 – 1994) took over the businesses and expanded the Bajaj Group to fit into the Nehruvian vision of a modern, cosmopolitan, and industrial India. He navigated the tumultuous partition era and post-independence legalities with skill and grace.

Ramkrishna Bajaj – The Ethicist

Ramkrishna Bajaj (1923 – 1994) took over the Bajaj Group in 1972 and approached the business from a holistic perspective. He co-founded the Council for Fair Business Practices and the Advertising Standards Council of India. Both of which remain important bodies today in India.

Rahul Bajaj – The Innovator

Rahul Bajaj (1938 – 2022) was a former member of the Rajya Sabha and Padma Bhushan awardee. He took over the Group in 1994 and laid the foundation for key Group activities in the auto, insurance, investment, and consumer finance sectors. Under his leadership, the Group became one of the largest and most renowned Indian business conglomerates. He passionately led the Group’s CSR activities and the Jamnalal Bajaj Foundation.
