Rahul Bajaj (10-6-1939 – 12-2-2022) was an Indian business leader and philanthropist. He had made a significant impact in the corporate world as well as in the Indian society.


Introduction

Rahul Bajaj was the former chairman of the Bajaj Group of companies. He was a visionary leader who transformed the Bajaj Group into a multinational conglomerate. Bajaj was born on June 30, 1938, in Kolkata, India and passed away on February 12, 2022, at the age of 83. Rahul Bajaj was a pioneering figure who shaped the Bajaj Group into a global conglomerate through his innovative leadership.

Education

He completed his schooling from the Cathedral and John Connon School in Bombay. He then graduated from St. Stephen’s College in Delhi in 1958 and earned a degree in law from Bombay University. After this, he pursued an MBA degree at the Harvard Business School in the US.

Building a world-renowned automobile giant

Upon his return, he learnt the nuances of business with Bajaj Electricals and then went on to build a world-renowned Indian automobile giant. He was at the helm when the eternally iconic chant, Hamara Bajaj, was coined.

Business Leadership

Rahul Bajaj ably lead the Bajaj Group as Chairman for over four decades. Rahul Bajaj inherited and carried forward Bajaj Group’s core values of integrity and trust, forming an unshakable foundation. His friends and colleagues revered him as plain-spoken, and many a times called him ‘fearless’ as he voiced his opinions to power. His leadership and vision are an inspiration to many, and he leaves behind an unbeatable spirit. Our heart swells with pride to see people the world over shower him with tributes being a promoter of entrepreneurs, a voice of the industry and the cornerstone of making brand Bajaj a household name.
As India mourns the loss of an extraordinary industrialist, we will always remember him as a visionary with tremendous courage who contributed to the country and
community alike.

Journey as an Entrepreneur

Rahul Bajaj headed the Bajaj Group of companies. He was a recipient of many awards, including the Padma Bhushan from the Government of India and honorary doctorates from six universities. Bajaj was a former member of the Rajya Sabha (Upper House of Indian Parliament) and former chairman of Indian Airlines. He led the CSR activities of the Bajaj Group of companies and charitable trusts.

Bajaj became a part of his father’s group as Deputy General Manager. Under the guidance of Naval K Firodia, CEO of Bajaj Auto, Rahul learned the nuances of the business. Later, he was appointed the Managing Director of Bajaj Auto. Under his leadership, the company witnessed tremendous growth. Bajaj sales hit a low point around 2001 but soon recovered from the loss with effective marketing and promotion. He split Bajaj Auto into three units in 2008 and his sons are now managing the day to day affairs of the company.

Awards and Recognitions

Rahul Bajaj was appointed the chairman of Indian Airlines in 1986 and was awarded Padma Bhushan in 2001. He was elected to Rajya Sabha from Maharashtra in 2006. In 2013, the Bajaj family won the ‘Distinguished Family of the Year’ award for dedicating their wealth and time for the public good. The family runs schools, vocational and technical training institutes, hospitals, and rural development programs.

Rahul Bajaj’s ‘Fearless’ Approach

Rahul Bajaj was known in corporate circles as the man who does not mince words when it comes to any matter of national interest or echoing corporate India’s woes. He was regarded as plain-spoken and his friends called him ‘fearless.’ Under Indira Gandhi, he protested against the License Raj and was vocal about his opinions.

Political Career

Rahul Bajaj had a notable political career as well. He was appointed as the Chairman of Indian Airlines in 1986 and was awarded Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 2001. In June 2006, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Maharashtra, the upper house of the Indian Parliament. Despite being an entrepreneur, he actively engaged in national and political matters, particularly in voicing the concerns of corporate India. He was known for his plain-spoken approach and was regarded as “fearless” by his peers. Throughout his life, he dedicated himself to the public good and actively participated in various social initiatives, including those run by the Bajaj Group’s charitable trusts.

Contributions to Corporate Governance

Rahul Bajaj, the chairman emeritus of Bajaj Auto Limited, has been a strong advocate of good corporate governance and ethical business practices. He has been a pioneer in promoting transparency and accountability in the corporate sector. Over the years, he has played a key role in setting up various committees aimed at improving the governance practices in Indian companies. He has been a member of the committees set up by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs and the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), to suggest changes in the corporate governance norms in the country. Bajaj’s belief in good governance has not only helped in creating a better business environment but has also earned him recognition as an industry leader and a respected business figure in India. His contributions to the field of corporate governance have set a benchmark for other companies to follow.

His presence will be missed, but his legacy will live on forever.
