In recent political discourse, Rahul Gandhi, a prominent Indian politician, has raised concerns about the business success of Indian industrialist Gautam Adani and his alleged connection to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

  • Gandhi has made various allegations, including that Adani has established shell companies to invest in foreign companies and that the government has changed rules to benefit Adani’s businesses.
  • He has also called for transparency on the number of joint foreign visits made by Modi and Adani. These allegations have sparked a heated debate and drawn attention to the potential influence of big businesses on politics in India.

NEW DELHI: Rahul Gandhi, a prominent figure in the Indian National Congress, made remarks in the Lok Sabha (lower house of the Indian Parliament) on Tuesday regarding the connection between billionaire Gautam Adani and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The senior Congress leader showed a photograph of the two during his speech, as he raised questions about their relationship.

Adani-Modi Link: Rahul Gandhi Speaks Out

Gandhi stated that during his recent foot march from Kanyakumari to Kashmir, he heard Adani’s name repeatedly mentioned by people. He stated that across the country, people were talking about how Adani seemed to succeed in every business he entered. Gandhi went on to claim that the relationship between Adani and Modi goes back many years to when Modi was serving as the Chief Minister of Gujarat. He said that Adani stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Modi and was loyal to him, helping him to construct the idea of a Resurgent Gujarat.

Adani’s Business Success and Ties Questioned

According to Gandhi, the “real magic” began when Modi became Prime Minister in 2014. Gandhi also claimed that the government has changed rules in favor of Adani, which has allowed him to enter into new businesses and succeed. As an example, Gandhi pointed to the government’s decision to award Adani the control of six airports, including the highly profitable Mumbai airport. He accused the government of using agencies such as the CBI and ED to take the airport away from its previous owner, GVK, and give it to Adani.

Accusation of Adani Group’s Shell Companies

Rahul Gandhi claimed that the Adani Group, owned by billionaire Gautam Adani, has established shell companies for the purpose of re-investing in Indian companies. A shell company is a type of business structure that exists only on paper and is used for various purposes including holding assets. The use of shell companies by the Adani Group, according to Gandhi, raises questions about the group’s business practices and potential implications. However, these claims have not been independently verified and Adani Group has not commented on them.

Demand for Transparency on PM-Adani Joint Visits

In a recent statement, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has called for transparency in regard to the foreign visits made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and billionaire businessman Gautam Adani. Gandhi demanded that the public should be informed about the number of visits made by the two together both before and after Modi became Prime Minister. This demand has been made amidst growing concerns and allegations of a close relationship between Modi and Adani, which Gandhi claims has benefited Adani’s business interests. The Prime Minister’s Office and Adani Group have not commented on Gandhi’s demand. The call for transparency and disclosure is likely to add fuel to the ongoing debate surrounding the relationship between Modi and Adani.

Accusation of Adani-Favored Budget

In addition to his demand for transparency on foreign visits, Rahul Gandhi has also made claims that the recent 2023-24 budget has been tailored to benefit the business interests of Adani Group. Gandhi has pointed to the various measures and proposals in the budget that he believes are specifically aimed at helping Adani Group, and has accused the government of putting the interests of one company ahead of the country’s economic interests. This claim has generated controversy and sparked a heated debate within the political arena, with many leaders from the opposition party supporting Gandhi’s allegations.

Rahul Gandhi’s remarks in the Lok Sabha have brought attention to the relationship between Adani and Modi and raised questions about the government’s role in Adani’s success in various businesses.

The government has not yet responded to Gandhi’s accusations, and it remains to be seen what impact this will have on the budget and the government’s relationship with Adani Group.
