E-waste, or electronic waste, is a growing global environmental and public health issue. Discarded electronic items such as phones, batteries, and laptops can contain hazardous materials and contribute to land, air, and water pollution if not properly disposed of.

Tackling E-Waste in India with 300,000 Volunteers

Lions Clubs International has announced the deployment of nearly 10,000 clubs in India, comprising around 300,000 volunteers, to address the growing problem of e-waste in the country. E-waste, including discarded phones, batteries, laptops and other electronic items, can contain hazardous materials and pose a risk to public health if not properly disposed of.

Addressing Growing E-Waste Problem with Awareness Campaign

In the 2019-2020 fiscal year, India generated over 100,000 tonnes of e-waste from 21 different types of electronic devices, according to the Central Pollution Control Board. The Lions Clubs International, with over 1.4 million volunteers in more than 200 countries, aims to address the issue of e-waste globally. In India, the organization will work to raise awareness about responsible e-waste management and will launch a campaign in a few months to assist with e-waste management.

The Lions Clubs International has a history of humanitarian work, including preventing blindness, fighting diabetes and childhood cancer, and establish in schools and training centers in India.

Call for Individual Responsibility in Addressing E-Waste Crisis

A P Singh, International Third Vice President of Lions Clubs International, said, “It is concerning that a majority of e-waste collection is done through the informal sector in India. While the government has certain regulations in place, it is not solely their responsibility to address this issue. It is time for every individual to take responsibility and work towards resolving this problem. Lions Clubs International has mobilized and provided services globally in response to emerging situations. E-waste is a clear and present threat to the environment and human health, and if left unaddressed, it could potentially threaten the continued existence of life on earth.”

E-Waste Management Campaign

Singh added, “Immediate action is necessary to address this issue. In developed nations, e-waste management is considered the responsibility of every individual, and in India, Lions Clubs are working to create that same awareness. In the coming months, Lions Clubs will begin assisting people with e-waste management and run a campaign to raise awareness about the importance of responsible e-waste management. Similar to the Swatch Bharat awareness campaign, it is important for India to take responsibility for e-waste management. The best solution is to recycle or refurbish e-waste responsibly, or even donate these devices to underprivileged children. At Lions Clubs, we believe in the motto “Kindness matters”. These refurbished mobile phones and laptops can be used to promote computer literacy and provide almost free access to technology for those who need support.”
