World Post Day is a day to celebrate the achievements and innovations of the postal sector, which has been serving humanity for centuries.

World Post Day is an international day that occurs each year on October 9, the anniversary of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), which started in 1874 in Switzerland. The UPU was the start of the global communications revolution, introducing the ability to write letter to others all over the world. World Post Day recognises the invaluable contributions of postal workers to our societies and economies. It also aims to raise awareness about the importance of postal services in everyday lives and their role in global social and economic development.

Theme of World Post Day

The theme for World Post Day 2023 is “Delivering Development for All”. The theme reflects the UPU’s vision of ensuring that everyone, everywhere can access affordable, reliable and innovative postal services. The theme also highlights the Post’s contribution to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, especially the goals related to poverty eradication, quality education, decent work and economic growth, reduced inequalities, climate action and partnerships.

History of World Post Day

The idea of celebrating World Post Day was proposed by an Indian delegate, Shri Anand Mohan Narula, at the UPU Congress in Tokyo, Japan, in 1969. The proposal was approved by the Congress and since then, World Post Day has been celebrated annually on October 9. The first official celebration of World Post Day was in 1970.

Significance of World Post Day

World Post Day is significant because it celebrates the achievements and innovations of the postal sector, which has been serving humanity for centuries. The postal sector has adapted to the changing needs and demands of customers, offering a wide range of services such as mail delivery, financial inclusion, e-commerce, philately, logistics and more. The postal sector also plays a vital role in connecting people and businesses across borders, fostering cultural diversity and social cohesion. Moreover, the postal sector supports various humanitarian and development causes, such as delivering vaccines, providing emergency relief, promoting literacy and education, empowering women and youth, and protecting the environment.

Celebrations of World Post Day

Member nations around the globe use this day to launch new postal initiatives and hold special exhibitions to raise awareness about the importance of postal services in everyday lives and their role in global social and economic development. Some of the common ways to celebrate World Post Day are:

  • Sending letters or postcards to friends and family members
  • Visiting a local post office or museum to learn more about the history and operations of the postal sector
  • Participating in philatelic activities such as stamp collecting or designing
  • Appreciating and thanking postal workers for their hard work and dedication
  • Supporting postal campaigns or projects that aim to improve the lives of people and communities

Important Facts of World Post Day

Some of the important facts about World Post Day are:

  • The UPU is a specialized agency of the United Nations that coordinates postal policies among member nations and provides technical assistance to improve postal services.
  • The UPU has 192 member countries and operates four regional offices in Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe and Latin America.
  • The UPU has designated nine postal operators as global champions for their outstanding performance in various aspects of postal services. These are Australia Post, China Post Group Corporation, Correos de Chile S.A., Deutsche Post DHL Group AG (Germany), Emirates Post Group (United Arab Emirates), La Poste (France), Magyar Posta Zrt. (Hungary), Swiss Post AG (Switzerland) and United States Postal Service (USA).
  • The UPU organises an international letter-writing competition for young people every year to promote literacy and creativity. The theme for 2023 is “Write a letter to a family member about your experience with Covid-19”.
  • The UPU also issues special stamps every year to commemorate World Post Day. The stamps feature various themes related to postal services such as biodiversity, peace, innovation, sport and culture.
