Why Most Gyms in India Struggle — And What Gymstart Is Doing About It

The Indian fitness industry is growing fast. New gyms are opening every month, equipment is getting better, and more people are becoming health conscious. But behind this growth, there is a harsh reality that most people don’t talk about.

A large number of gym owners are struggling.

Some are barely breaking even. Some are stuck in daily operations. And many silently shut down within a few years.

This is exactly the problem that Gymstart was created to solve.

Founded in October 2024 by Helius D’Souza, Gymstart is a mentoring and consulting company that works closely with gym owners to help them fix what’s not working in their business. While the company itself is new, the experience behind it is not.

Helius brings over 15 years of experience in the fitness industry. From being deeply involved in sales to working closely with gym operations, he has seen the industry from the inside. He has also been trained and mentored in both sales and business, which gives him an edge that most fitness professionals don’t have.

Before starting Gymstart, he also worked as a celebrity trainer, training A-list Bollywood clients, appeared on podcasts, and received recognition for his contribution to the industry. But what pushed him to start Gymstart was not fame or recognition.

It was frustration.

“I kept seeing gym owners struggle,” he says. “Good people, hardworking people, shutting down their gyms or making almost no profit. That didn’t sit right with me.”

That frustration turned into a mission — to help gym owners not just survive, but actually grow.

One of the biggest mistakes gym owners make is thinking that running a gym is only about fitness. In reality, a gym is a business first. And like any business, it needs strong systems in marketing, sales, and customer retention.

This is where most gyms fail.

Low memberships, poor sales conversion, trainers who don’t know how to sell, owners stuck handling everything themselves, and high client drop-offs — these are not rare problems. They are common across the industry.

Gymstart works by identifying these exact problems and solving them step by step.

Instead of giving generic advice, the team goes deep into each gym’s situation. They look at the marketing, check how leads are coming in, analyse the sales process, understand the offers being used, and study how clients are being retained.

Once the gaps are clear, they build systems around it.

This includes improving lead generation, fixing appointment setting, training staff on sales, creating better offers, and mentoring owners so they can take control of their business.

One thing that makes Gymstart different is its strong focus on sales.

“In India, most gym consultants talk only about management,” Helius explains. “But management alone doesn’t grow a gym. Sales does. If you don’t fix sales, nothing else matters.”

This understanding has helped Gymstart deliver real results in a short time.

Since starting, they have already worked with more than 25 gyms.

In one case, they helped a gym increase its monthly revenue from 14 lakhs to 26 lakhs. In many others, they have improved lead flow, fixed broken sales processes, and increased client retention.

But one story stands out.

A gym in Bangalore, located in Richard’s Park, was on the verge of shutting down. The management kept changing, the owners had very little understanding of how to run the business, and almost every system was broken.

“It was a complete mess,” Helius recalls. “Marketing was not working, sales were weak, and there was no structure.”

Gymstart stepped in and started from scratch.

They analysed every part of the business, identified the biggest problems, and began fixing them one by one. It wasn’t easy, and it didn’t happen overnight. But with the right systems in place, things started changing.

Slowly, the gym began to stabilise.

Then it started growing.

Eventually, it reached a monthly revenue of 26 lakhs — something that once felt impossible for the owners.

Stories like this are the reason Gymstart is gaining attention.

But the journey hasn’t been easy.

In the beginning, one of the biggest challenges was understanding the exact pain points of gym owners and finding the right solutions. Every gym is different, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach.

Another challenge was acceptance.

“Ego can be a big problem in this industry,” Helius says honestly. “Some owners and trainers don’t like being told that something is wrong. But if you don’t accept the problem, you can’t fix it.”

Over time, as results started speaking, that resistance began to reduce.

Today, Gymstart is positioning itself as a serious growth partner for gym owners who are ready to improve.

The approach is simple — no overcomplicated theory, no complex systems. Just clear systems, practical strategies, and consistent mentoring.

What makes it work is the combination of real industry experience and strong business understanding.

Gymstart doesn’t just tell gym owners what to do. It shows them how to do it.

Looking ahead, the goal is clear — to raise the standard of the Indian fitness industry.

“If gyms grow, the industry grows,” Helius says. “And if the industry grows, more people get access to better fitness services. It’s all connected.”

For gym owners who feel stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure about their next step, the message is simple.

You don’t have to figure everything out on your own.

Sometimes, the right guidance can change everything.

If you’re a gym owner looking to improve your business, you can follow Gymstart on Instagram at @thegymstart to learn more and get in touch.

Because in today’s fitness industry, working hard is not enough.

You need the right systems.
