JHARSUGUDA: Vedanta Limited, Jharsuguda felicitated the successful students who were enrolled under its flagship CSR educational programme Vedanta Vidyarthi Vikas Yojana (VVVY) considering their glorious performances in this year’s State matriculation exams. Mr. Mahendra Mallik, Director OPEPA chaired the sixth annual convocation which was held at Vedanta Meadows Multi-Purpose Hall. Also present on the occasion were Mr. Bikas Pradhan, District Education Officer, Jharsuguda and Mr. Abhijit Pati, CEO, Aluminium Business, Vedanta Ltd.
Addressing the annual convocation of Vedanta Vidyarthi Vikash Yojana at Jharsuguda, Mahendra Mallik, Director OPEPA today said that in the success of Project VVVY at Jharsuguda, Vedanta has demonstrated that corporates can make real difference to educational scenario in the region where they operate. He said that project VVVY is a role model in corporate CSR for others in the state to follow.
Speaking on the occasion Abhijit Pati, CEO, Aluminium Business, Vedanta Ltd. said that “We are committed to expand the scope of the project at state level. In the coming days the focus will be on quality enhancement by integrating scholastic support for higher education and skill oriented academic input program. The program will also explore innovation to promote Girl child education. To support scientific temper we will also help bringing up a state of art Scientific Lab at Jharsuguda for all schools to access. VVVY and children have made us proud.”
Initiated in the year 2009 in the peripheral villages of Vedanta to enable students of vernacular high schools to pass matriculation, the project has achieved significant success by improving the pass percentage from 18% in 2008 to 99.80 % in the current session. A total of 109 students appeared matriculation this year, out of which 108 students passed class 10th with 40% first division .The programme has also recorded 100% passing percentage for girls is another reason of cheer. Till date 3031 high school students have availed academic support through VVVY centres at rural villages of Jharsuguda. The project is anchored by NGO partner AJKA with the CSR team which involves Parents, Village watch committees and trained teachers. The project also leverages government educational infrastructure in the villages for conduct of the program.
Also present on the occasion was Bikas Chandra Pradhan, District Education Officer, Jharsuguda, who assured all support to such a laudable project.
The programme felicitated all the children present with a memento and the toppers were given away trophies with financial assistance to reward their performance. Present on the occasion were parents, teachers, members of the village education committee, senior officials from Vedanta and prominent citizens from Jharsuguda district.
