10 Common Mistakes to Avoid for a Prosperous Dhanteras Celebration

Dhanteras is a significant Hindu festival that marks the beginning of Diwali, the festival of lights. It is celebrated on the thirteenth lunar day of the dark fortnight of the month of Kartik. On this auspicious day, people worship Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kubera, the gods of wealth and prosperity, and buy gold, silver, jewelry, utensils, and other items as a symbol of good fortune. However, there are also some things that one should avoid doing on Dhanteras, as they are considered inauspicious or disrespectful to the deities. Here are 10 things you should never do on Dhanteras:

1. Do not buy sharp objects

Buying sharp objects such as knives, scissors, needles, or razors on Dhanteras is believed to bring bad luck and cut off the flow of wealth and happiness in your life. These objects are also associated with violence and injury, which are contrary to the spirit of peace and harmony that Diwali represents. Therefore, avoid buying or using sharp objects on Dhanteras.

2. Do not buy metal or plastic items

Buying metal or plastic items on Dhanteras is also considered unlucky, as these materials are not pure or natural. They are also prone to rusting, breaking, or melting, which symbolize the decay or destruction of wealth and prosperity. Instead, buy items made of gold, silver, brass, copper, or clay, as these are considered auspicious and durable materials that attract positive energy and blessings from the gods.

3. Do not buy glassware

Buying glassware on Dhanteras is another thing to avoid, as glass is a fragile and brittle material that can easily break or shatter. This is seen as a sign of bad luck and misfortune, as it indicates the loss or damage of wealth and property. Moreover, glass is a transparent material that does not reflect light, which is contrary to the essence of Diwali, which is the celebration of light over darkness. Therefore, refrain from buying or using glassware on Dhanteras.

4. Do not buy oil or ghee

Buying oil or ghee on Dhanteras is also a taboo, as these are the items that are used to light the lamps or diyas on Diwali. Buying them on Dhanteras is considered disrespectful to the gods, as it implies that you are not prepared or eager to welcome them into your home. It is also believed that buying oil or ghee on Dhanteras will reduce their quantity or quality, which will affect the brightness and longevity of the lamps or diyas. Therefore, buy oil or ghee well in advance and store them in a clean and dry place.

5. Do not buy black or white clothes

Buying black or white clothes on Dhanteras is also frowned upon, as these are the colors of mourning and death in Hindu culture. Wearing or gifting black or white clothes on Dhanteras is considered inauspicious and unlucky, as it invites negative energy and sorrow into your life. Instead, buy or wear clothes of bright and vibrant colors, such as red, yellow, green, or pink, as these are the colors of joy and prosperity that please the gods and bring good luck.

6. Do not buy leather or fur items

Buying leather or fur items on Dhanteras is also a no-no, as these are the products of animal cruelty and violence. Buying or using leather or fur items on Dhanteras is considered sinful and offensive to the gods, as it shows a lack of compassion and respect for other living beings. It is also believed that buying or using leather or fur items on Dhanteras will bring bad karma and misfortune to you and your family. Therefore, avoid buying or using leather or fur items on Dhanteras.

7. Do not buy footwear

Buying footwear on Dhanteras is also a bad idea, as footwear is considered a lowly and impure item that is worn on the feet, which are the lowest part of the body. Buying or wearing new footwear on Dhanteras is considered disrespectful and insulting to the gods, as it implies that you are stepping on their blessings and grace. It is also believed that buying or wearing new footwear on Dhanteras will bring bad luck and obstacles in your life. Therefore, avoid buying or wearing new footwear on Dhanteras.

8. Do not buy brooms or dustpans

Buying brooms or dustpans on Dhanteras is also a mistake, as these are the items that are used to sweep or clean the house. Buying them on Dhanteras is considered unlucky and wasteful, as it implies that you are sweeping away or throwing away your wealth and prosperity. It is also believed that buying brooms or dustpans on Dhanteras will bring poverty and misery to you and your family. Therefore, avoid buying or using brooms or dustpans on Dhanteras.

9. Do not buy books or stationery

Buying books or stationery on Dhanteras is also a bad move, as these are the items that are used for education and learning. Buying them on Dhanteras is considered inappropriate and unnecessary, as it implies that you are not satisfied or content with your knowledge and wisdom. It is also believed that buying books or stationery on Dhanteras will reduce your intelligence and memory, which will affect your academic and professional success. Therefore, avoid buying or using books or stationery on Dhanteras.

10. Do not buy salt or spices

Buying salt or spices on Dhanteras is also a blunder, as these are the items that are used to add flavor and taste to the food. Buying them on Dhanteras is considered rude and greedy, as it implies that you are not grateful or happy with the food that the gods have provided you. It is also believed that buying salt or spices on Dhanteras will spoil your health and appetite, which will affect your well-being and happiness. Therefore, avoid buying or using salt or spices on Dhanteras.

Dhanteras is a wonderful occasion to celebrate the abundance and prosperity that the gods have bestowed upon us. However, we should also be mindful and respectful of the customs and traditions that are associated with this festival. By avoiding these 10 things on Dhanteras, we can ensure that we do not offend or displease the gods, and instead, invite their blessings and grace into our lives. Happy Dhanteras! 🙏
