According to the National TB Prevalence Survey 2019-2021, released on March 24, 2022, to mark World TB Day, Tuberculosis (TB) infects 316 Indians per 100,000 — way above the 193 predicted by World Health Organization (WHO) in 2019.
The WHO has set a target of completely eliminating TB from the World by 2030. India has set a target of completely eliminating TB by 2025. In order to achieve this, there is a need to create awareness so that people affected get TB treatment done on time to prevent the spread of TB in the community.
In this direction, Community Radio Alfaz-e-Mewat FM 107.8 has started a new radio series “TB Challenge: TB Harega, Desh Jeetega” beginning November 21, 2022, in partnership with Seeking Modern Applications for Real Transformation (SMART). The objective of the series is to provide information about TB disease, its symptoms, treatment and nutrition.
The radio series will be broadcast through Community Radio Alfaz-e-Mewat every Sunday and Monday at 9:20 am and repeat broadcast at 7:30 pm.
The launch event of this community-based program was organized at ITI, Nagina, and efforts were made to make the community understand that TB is a disease caused by bacteria that spreads from one person to another through the air. Although TB of the lungs is most common, but it can occur in any part of the body like the brain, uterus, mouth, liver, kidney, throat, bone etc. TB infection is spread by small droplets coming out of the mouth and nose during coughing and sneezing. Often due to the stigma attached to the disease, many cases go unreported and remain untreated.
Mohd. Shakir, District TB Program Manager, , present at the event shared that both governmental and non-governmental efforts are being made to fight TB. The government has set up DOTS centers across the country, where TB is tested and treated free of cost.
Pooja Oberoi Murada, Principal Lead – Outreach for Development, S M Sehgal Foundation, and representative of Community Radio Alfaz-e-Mewat FM 107.8 shared that, “Through this series, we are trying to create awareness among the community about TB and its prevention and that we all should join hands for a TB-free world. We hope that the listeners will take this information to others in their community, and people suffering from TB will be able to benefit from the information received from the program.”
