ROURKELA, ODISHA (India CSR): Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), has signed a significant agreement with Adani Enterprises Limited (AEL) for the development and expansion of the Taldih Iron Mine. This strategic partnership aims to enhance the mine’s production capacity and secure a stable iron ore supply for SAIL’s growing operations.

A Strategic Move for Iron Ore Production Expansion

Key Details of the Agreement
The collaboration operates under the Mines Developer and Operator (MDO) model, with ambitious plans to expand the Taldih Iron Mine’s production capacity from 2 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 7 MTPA.

  • Development Phase: The project will involve the construction of new plants and supporting infrastructure, set to be completed within two years.
  • Production Timeline: Mining operations are expected to commence in the third year and continue for the next 25 years.

Existing Operations at Taldih Mine
Currently, Taldih Iron Mine operates at 2 MTPA capacity, relying on mobile crushing and screening plants and smaller earth-moving machinery under SAIL’s management.

Advanced Infrastructure for Sustainable Mining

Environmental Clearance Secured
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change granted approval for expanding Taldih Mine’s capacity to 7 MTPA on April 28, 2023.

  • Eco-Friendly Technology: The project includes the installation of a long-distance conveyor belt system, which will transport mined ore from Taldih to the railway siding at Barsua Valley, reducing environmental impact.

Infrastructure Development Highlights
The agreement encompasses the construction of modernized mining facilities and state-of-the-art infrastructure to support sustainable and efficient operations.

Boosting India’s Steel Industry

Strengthening Raw Material Base
This initiative ensures a consistent supply of high-quality iron ore, meeting the immediate production demands of SAIL and supporting future expansions across its steel plants.

  • Contribution to Steel Growth: The project aligns with India’s vision to become a global leader in steel production, addressing the increasing demand for raw materials.

Economic and Industrial Impact
By expanding operations at Taldih, SAIL and Adani Enterprises aim to contribute to the growth of the local economy while bolstering the national steel industry’s competitive edge.
