Rajasthan’s Royal Heritage: A Guide to Its Magnificent Palaces and Forts

Rajasthan also known as the ‘The Land of Kings’ is associated with many qualities like royalty, sheer size and a deep-rooted culture. It is home to some of the best ever forts & palaces in Rajasthan which narrates the story of the great kings, brave battles and architectural marvels. The first reason is related to the kingdom history of the state and the second one is also associated with the richness of the palaces that make this state one of the most preferred by tourists willing to have a luxury Rajasthan tour. Whether you are fascinated by the defensive mechanisms of the mighty hill forts in Rajasthan or the royal opulence and palace intrigues of its maharajas, this tour through some iconic buildings takes you back in history.

In this article, we are discussing about few of the magnificent forts and palaces of Rajasthanwhich can be useful for those who are planning for a Rajasthan trip.

1. Amer Fort: The Jewel of Jaipur

The Amer Fort situated in Jaipur is one of the renownedforts of Rajasthanor rather can be probably marked as famous. Constructed by Raja Man Singh in the sixteenth century this imposing edifice is an example of Rajput and Mughal architecture style. From within the fort, one has a vantage view of the surrounding scenery especially the Maota Lake which lies below the fort.

Key Highlights:

  • Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace): A beautiful hall with beautiful mirrors that glitters like a stars once the lights are switched on.
  • Elephant Ride: To add icing on the cake the visitors get the feel of the king by having a ride on the elephant to the fort.
  • Light and Sound Show: In the evening, the attraction of the light and sound show tells about the history of the fort impressively.

2. City Palace, Udaipur: The Crown Jewel of the Lake City

Built on the banks of Lake Pichola the City Palace in Udaipur is designed in white marble granite. The construction of the palace spread over hundreds of years; it occupies a unique place among the largest palaces in Rajasthan. The unique identity of the building is quite evident by the fusion of European, Chinese and Indian architectural designs.

Key Highlights:

  • Crystal Gallery: One of the world’s major private collections of crystals can be found there, and that includes chairs, sofas and even beds made of crystal!
  • Vintage Car Collection: Absolutely unique and appealing to every auto-maniac, this collection comprises some of the world’s rarest examples of classic cars belonging to the Maharajas of Udaipur.
  • Boat Ride on Lake Pichola: Take a boat ride and see the City Palace from the water; the boat also goes to the amazing Jag Mandir Palace, which is on an island in the palace’s lake.

3. Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur: The Majestic Guardian of the Blue City

Standing tall above the Blue city of Jodhpur Mehrangarh Fort is one of the largest forts of Rajasthan. This fort was constructed in the year 1459 by Rao Jodha and is the monument of Rajput valour and their capability of sustaining. The maze-like structure of the fort has walls that soar up to almost 130 meters high and provides the best vantage point to look at the city of Jodhpur with its trademark blue houses.

Key Highlights:

  • Chamunda Mataji Temple: There is a temple of Chamunda Devi which is the deity of the royal family.
  • Museum: Gaoligong fort museum contains an impressive royal artefact collection such as the palanquins, weapons, and costumes among others.
  • Rajasthan International Folk Festival: This music festival is staged at the fort and artists from all parts of the world are considered for it annually.

4. Rambagh Palace, Jaipur: The Ultimate Luxury Experience

For those who want to spend some time in the kingdom of royals then Jaipur is the perfect place for staying at Rambagh Palace. Now that is part of a luxury hotel by the Taj Group, this palace once belonged to the Maharaja of Jaipur.

  • Palatial Suites: Services in the palace include some of the best suites amongst the hotels in India available with vintage furniture, chandeliers and art works.
  • Fine Dining: A royal experience can be had at Suvarna Mahal, which is a special restaurant, that offers a palace like dining experience.
  • Royal Spa: The Jiva Grande Spa has special massage and body care programs that can be availed in a royal ambiance, which means relaxation in true kingly or queenly style.

5. Chittorgarh Fort: The Symbol of Rajput Valor

There is Chittorgarh Fort the second largest fort in India which is a world heritage site and represents the valor and the spirit of Rajputs. The fort has seen many historical battles like the ones in which the invaders laid siege to the fort like Alauddin Khilji.

Key Highlights:

  • Vijay Stambh (Victory Tower): This structure was erected by Rana Kumbha in the 15th century to celebrate the victory over the Sultan of Malwa; the construction of this nine-storeyed tower is an attained fact.
  • Padmini Palace: The palace of Rani Padmini, infamous for the beauty queen who committed Jauhar, self–immolation during the invasion of Alauddin Khilji on the fort.
  • Temples and Water Bodies: It has several temples, step-wells and reservoirs which depict the religious and daily life of people living in the fort.

Chittorgarh Fort is a must-visit for those interested in the tales of Rajasthan’s fearless warriors, and it’s a prime destination on any Rajasthan tour package.

6. Umaid Bhawan Palace, Jodhpur: A Blend of Luxury and History

Umaid Bhawan Palace is one of the last great Palaces built in India, the architecture is a blend of Art Deco architecture with influences of traditional Indian design. Nowadays some part of the Palace is a luxurious hotel and still some part of the Palace is fully occupied by the noble family of Royals.

Key Highlights:

  • Museum: The palace museum possesses items that were associated with the royal family such as the clocks, porcelain and weapons.
  • Luxury Hotel: Located in Agra within the palace complex, this portion of it is managed by the Taj Group of Hotels & Resorts and the services afforded here are as royally rich as any one could desire.
  • Vintage Car Collection: Like the city palace in Udaipur there is a collection of vintage cars that the royal family possessed for their luxury.
