N.P. Mohapatra (born in 1961) is a distinguished professional with a robust academic background and a career spanning over three decades in the fields of applied economics, rural development, and financial inclusion.
He holds an M.A. in Applied Economics and a Postgraduate Certificate in Sustainable Development from Staffordshire University, obtained under the prestigious Commonwealth Scholarship Programme. In addition, he earned the CAIIB certification from the Indian Institute of Banking & Finance (IIBF). Currently, he serves as the Chief General Manager of the Department of Economic Analysis and Research at NABARD’s Head Office in Mumbai.
Leadership and Governance
N.P. Mohapatra also held a position on the Board of Directors of NABARD Consultancy Services (NABCONS), where he contributed to shaping the organization’s strategic initiatives.
From 2017 to 2019, he successfully led NABARD’s Regional Office in Chhattisgarh, where he spearheaded various developmental projects aimed at enhancing rural livelihoods and financial inclusion.
Professional Journey
Joining NABARD in 1984, N.P. Mohapatra has amassed over 35 years of extensive experience, working with NGOs across Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. He played a significant role in implementing the Self-Help Group (SHG) Bank Linkage Programme, a flagship initiative of NABARD to empower rural communities through microfinance.
As a faculty member at the Bankers Institute of Rural Development (BIRD), Lucknow, from 2000 to 2005, he conducted numerous programs on microfinance, non-farm sector development, and financial management. Notably, he organized National Exposure Programs for SHG Leaders under the UNDP initiative in collaboration with the National Institute of Rural Development (NIRD) and BIRD.
His expertise extends to conducting inspections of Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) and cooperative banks, further strengthening the financial ecosystem for rural and semi-urban areas.
Global Exposure and Research
N.P. Mohapatra’s international experience is notable. He visited Thailand, the Philippines, Bangladesh, and South Africa to study various microfinance models, and Israel to explore value chain models in agriculture. He chaired a session at the Global Workshop on Small Stakeholders, organized by APRACA-IFAD in Bangkok, showcasing his expertise on global platforms.

N.P. Mohapatra has co-authored the book “Towards Financial Inclusion,” a seminal work aimed at promoting inclusive growth through financial literacy and accessibility.
In his earlier career, he contributed to journalism, serving as a sub-editor for Sambad, a leading Odia daily, where he worked alongside renowned personalities like Late Surendra Mohanty, a celebrated Odia writer, and Soumya Ranjan Patnaik, Editor of Sambad and Eastern Media Limited. He also contributed to news agencies and the sports magazine Sports Information, reflecting his versatility and passion for storytelling.
