RAIPUR (Chhattisgarh): In a significant development, the District Collector of Dantewada has slapped a penalty of INR 1620 crore on NMDC Kirandul. The penalty is based on alleged irregularities in the operation of sanctioned mining leases, and the company has been given a strict deadline of 15 days to comply.

NMDC, one of India’s leading mining companies, has found itself in hot water after the Dantewada district administration took a hard stance against alleged violations in its mining operations. The company has been accused of not adhering to the regulations outlined in the sanctioned mining leases, leading to the imposition of a hefty penalty by the local authorities.

In the earlier stages, NMDC was issued a notice regarding alleged violations in its mining operations at Mineral Numbers 14 and 11. However, the company’s explanations did not satisfy the authorities, leading to the escalation of the matter.

Violation of Mining Regulations

The penalty revolves around the alleged breach of several provisions of the Chhattisgarh Mining Rules, 2009. The Collector has outlined these violations in the notice and stated that NMDC failed to operate within the legal framework set by the state for mining activities.

15-Day Deadline

Adding to the pressure, the Collector has directed NMDC to deposit the full amount of INR 1620 crore within 15 days. Failure to do so could lead to further legal and administrative actions against the company, including potential disruptions to its ongoing operations.

Implications for NMDC

This penalty marks a serious challenge for NMDC, which is already under scrutiny for its mining practices. The company’s ability to manage and address such substantial fines will be critical in maintaining its reputation and continuing its operations smoothly. The situation also underscores the growing enforcement of mining regulations in India, where authorities are increasingly vigilant about ensuring compliance with environmental and operational standards.

As NMDC grapples with this significant financial and regulatory challenge, all eyes will be on how the company responds to the Collector’s notice. The coming days will be crucial for NMDC, as they work to address the allegations and meet the payment deadline.
