Maharashtra Government Announces Closure of State Offices in Mumbai on December 6
MUMBAI (India CSR): The Maharashtra government has officially announced that December 6, the death anniversary of Dr. BR Ambedkar, will be observed as a public holiday in Mumbai. This declaration aligns with the city’s deep respect and remembrance for the influential social reformer and architect of the Indian Constitution.
Government Circular and Its Implications
A circular issued by the Maharashtra government stipulates that all state government and administrative offices in Mumbai and its sub-districts will remain shut on this significant day. This decision underlines the state’s commitment to honoring Ambedkar’s enduring legacy.
The Push for Public Holiday
This announcement follows a persuasive letter from Varsha Gaikwad, the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee President and MLA, to Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Gaikwad’s letter emphasized Dr. Ambedkar’s lifelong dedication to eradicating casteism and uplifting the poor, Dalits, and backward classes. She noted that Ambedkar’s death anniversary attracts vast crowds from within Maharashtra and internationally to Chaitya Bhoomi, his memorial at Shivaji Park. Gaikwad argued that a public holiday would allow more followers to pay their respects, fulfilling a long-standing demand of many state organizations.
Transportation Arrangements
In anticipation of the increased number of visitors, the Central Railway has arranged for 18 special long-distance trains to and from Mumbai, along with 12 extra local services on December 6. This move aims to ease the transportation challenges and accommodate the surge of people expected in the city.
Enhanced Security Measures
Recognizing the need for heightened security during this period, additional personnel from the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and the Government Railway Police (GRP) will be deployed at key stations in Mumbai. This includes a considerable increase in security personnel at Dadar station, as well as additional RPF staff at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, and Kalyan stations. These measures are intended to ensure public safety and order during the commemorations.
