Kolkata celebrates World CSR Day

KOLKATA: In Kolkata, two CSR events – one by the U.S Consulate General and another by Public Relations Society of India, Kolkata Chapter marked to celebrate February 18, 2017, World CSR Day.

AMERICAN CENTER: The U.S. Consulate General, Kolkata in collaboration with Nayan Mitra organised a panel discussion on ‘CSR in India: American and Indian Approaches’ on February 18, 2017 on the occasion of the World CSR Day in their Lincoln Room. The distinguished panellists comprised of  Dr. Bhaskar Chatterjee, policy-maker and also known as the Father of CSR in India; Dr. Sumona Ghosh, a prominent academician and a CSR researcher; Ms. Sukanya Patwardhan, CSR practitioner, having worked in renowned Companies such as the IBM, Tatas, WNS Services to name a few; Dr. Tehnaz Dastoor of  UNICEF.

The panel discussion was moderated by Ms. Nayan Mitra. Ms. Sarbani Bhattacharya, the Regional Corporate Communications & Corporate Social Responsibility Manager, East of Amway Foundation was called on the dias to elaborate on Amway’s CSR interventions in India. This was followed by the screening of the CSR film of Akshaya Patra Foundation, the world’s largest NGO-run school feeding programme, and a prominent Case Study world over. In other words, there was a seamless integration of understanding of the CSR philosophies and practices in India and the U.S.CSR in Kolkata

The Book titled, ‘Corporate Social Responsibility in India: Cases and Developments after the Legal Mandate’ was released in this forum by the U.S Consul General, Craig Hall in the presence of one of the editors, Ms. Nayan Mitra, a Developmental Consultant; Father of Indian CSR, Dr. Bhaskar Chatterjee; eminent CSR academician, Dr. Sumona Ghosh; CSR practitioners Ms. Sukanya Patwardhan (WNS Services); Ms. Sarbani Bhattacharya (Amway Foundation) ; Dr Tehnaz Dastoor (UNICEF). Dr. Chatterjee, on behalf of the editors and authors presented a copy of the Book to Mr. Hall post the release.

Additionally, 6 NGOs formed an integral part of the event, viz. Antara, Kadam, Iswar Sankalpa, NIBRT, World for Better Living and Smile Foundation, who had their stalls at the Auditorium. The programme ignited keen interest among over 120 strong, vibrant audience and left them eager to know more.

Public Relations Society of India (PRSI): PRSI, in association with iLEAD celebrated the World CSR Day on February 18, 2017 by a panel discussion on ‘Corporate Social Responsibility in India: Its many facets’ by Dr. Bhaskar Chatterjee, Former Director General and CEO of the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, also known as the Father of CSR in India; Dr. Sumona Ghosh, Assistant Professor, Department of Commerce and Business Administration of St. Xavier’s University; Ms. Sukanya Patwardhan, Global Head, Learning and Development at WNS Global Services. The event was moderated by Ms. Nayan Mitra.Pr and CSR

Dr. Chatterjee, as a key note speaker addressed the 60 niche audience on the changing facets of CSR in India; Ms. Sukanya Patwardhan spoke of the Case Studies of the CSR initiatives of WNS Services and the social enterprise of Tata ClasseEdge. Ms. Sumona Ghosh spoke of the integration of CSR in the curriculum of undergraduate and graduate education. The interaction from the audience was eclectic and a lot of clarification and personal handholding went much beyond the purview of the panel.

The Book, ‘Corporate Social Responsibility in India: Cases and Developments after the Legal Mandate’ was released in this forum and generated much interest.

This is a first-of its kind Book, that brings together policy makers, practitioners, researchers, consultants in its pursuit to give to the world the Indian CSR view and experiences. It was first launched at the Industrie-und Handelskammer zu Koln (Chamber of Commerce) in Cologne, Germany on August 1, 2016 by Springer; then, on September 2, 2016 at the Imperial Hotel, New Delhi by Dr. Bhaskar Chatterjee, the then Director General and CEO of the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (Ministry of Corporate Affairs) and known as the ‘Father of CSR in India.

Infact, Dr. Bhaskar Chatterjee has authored the foreword, where he writes, “This is indeed a first of its kind book and marks a watershed in the journey of CSR. It is an extremely important contribution to the body of knowledge in the area of CSR and Corporate Governance in emerging economies that is driven by a completely different set of challenges, opportunities and requirements from that of developed economies.”
