Keynote Address by Pierre Omidyar, Founder and Chairman of eBay and Co-Founder Omidyar Networks

MUMBAI: The JSW Foundation, an independent trust of the JSW Group, chaired by Mrs. Sangita Jindal, is hosting an event on January 4th, 2011 in Mumbai, in collaboration with Asia Society India Centre. This event will mark the launch of the OP Jindal Memorial Lecture Series. The Lecture seeks to highlight industry response and interface with issues related to social development, policy, and international relations.

In anticipation of the event, Mrs. Sangita Jindal said “We are introducing the O.P. Jindal Memorial Lecture Series, which will be held annually and based around discussions and inputs received from eminent leaders and policy makers. Bauji always had the conviction that India should be self-reliant in every sector and keeping this in mind we have introduced this initiative. It is a privilege to have Mr. Pierre Omidyar contribute to the Lecture Series by sharing his ideas on Next-gen philanthropy.”

“Asia Society India Centre seeks to enhance and encourage new ideas across Asia. Building a more equitable world requires sensitizing the next generation to imaginative solutions for addressing national and transnational challenges. We are delighted to be associated with the JSW Foundation for the inaugural launch of the O.P. Jindal Memorial Lecture Series which furthers interdisciplinary dialogue on issues of strategic and social concern,” says Bunty Chand, Executive Director, Asia Society, India.

Pierre Omidyar, founder and chairman of eBay and founding partner of Omidyar Network, will kick-off the inaugural event by sharing his views on ‘Next Generation Philanthropy.’ Omidyar Network is a philanthropic investment firm dedicated to harnessing the power of markets to create opportunity for people to improve their lives. The organization invests in and helps scale innovative organizations to catalyze economic, social, and political change.

Omidyar’s remarks will be followed by a panel discussion of eminent speakers, explicitly Dr. JJ Irani, Director, Tata Sons, Anand Mahindra, VC & MD, Mahindra and Mahindra, Ajay Piramal, Chairman, Piramal Enterprises Ltd; the moderator for the panel discussion will be Madhabi Puri Buch, MD & CEO, ICICI Securities.

Speaking of the up-coming launch, Dr. JJ Irani said “In my view the Jindal Foundation has taken the right step to initiate the OP Jindal Memorial Lecture series, and I am very happy to participate. I would like to take this opportunity and congratulate Mrs Jindal in particular as well as the entire JSW Foundation group for having initiated this series. I wish them all the very best.”

JSW Foundation is an independent trust that administers the social development initiatives of the JSW Group. Every year, the Foundation, in consultation with plant managements and CSR teams at the plants, finalizes a set of activities that get built into the business plan. The Foundation lays emphasis on maintaining a continuum of social development thinking into the conduct of these activities. It assesses a transition towards a dedicated corpus for activities of our Foundation.

Asia Society was founded in 1956 by John D. Rockefeller the 3rd. It is the leading global organization working to strengthen relationships and promote understanding among the people and institutions across Asia and the United States.

The India Centre is a part of Asia Society’s global network of 11 offices. It is a not-for-profit, non-partisan institution inaugurated by Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh in 2006, and aims to be a key forum for catalyzing connections and exchange across and within Asia. It brings programming in the areas of Asian business, policy, education, current affairs, and arts and culture to India.
