Rising housing, education and everyday living costs have increased financial pressure on Indian households, while market-linked investments alone may not fully protect families from the loss of a primary earning member.

A sudden loss of the primary breadwinner halts monthly cash flows overnight. Term life insurance is specifically designed to provide pure mortality protection without linking the benefit to volatile capital-market performance. By replacing future earning capacity with a substantial, tax-free capital corpus, it helps ensure dependent families can maintain their dignity and living standards without liquidating hard-earned equity investments or distressed real estate holdings during an emotional crisis.

The Economic Realities Testing Family Balance Sheets

Household obligations look vastly different today than they did a decade ago. Changing lifestyle expectations, extended longevity among ageing dependent parents, and higher borrowing leverage demand an updated appraisal of personal risk management strategies.

  • Escalating Living Costs: Living costs in Indian metropolitan hubs can rise considerably over time, with expenses such as housing, healthcare and education sometimes increasing at rates different from headline inflation.
  • Extended Debt Tenures: High-value liabilities, particularly long-term home loans, should be considered when deciding life cover so that surviving family members have funds to manage outstanding debts, especially where a spouse is a co-borrower or secured assets could otherwise be affected.
  • Milestone Inflation: The cost of domestic engineering or medical degrees and overseas university education can rise significantly over time, making education inflation an important factor when estimating future financial requirements.
  • Lifestyle Health Vulnerabilities: Serious illnesses can affect a household’s income as well as increase medical expenses, making it useful to consider financial protection beyond basic hospitalisation cover.

Evaluating Suitability: Key Assessment Factors

Buying suitable term cover early in one’s career can help secure affordable long-term protection and provide financial support towards maintaining the family’s standard of living and important future milestones.

  • Targeted Cover Sizing: As a broad starting point, cover of around 10 to 15 times annual income may be considered, but the appropriate amount should also account for outstanding liabilities, future family expenses, financial goals and available assets.
  • Optimal Policy Tenure: Choose a policy tenure that reflects your expected earning years, outstanding liabilities and the period for which your dependants may need financial support. Longer or whole-life cover may be considered where it aligns with specific protection needs and affordability.
  • Comprehensive Living Riders: Consider suitable critical illness or accidental disability riders where required. Depending on the rider terms, benefits may include a lump-sum payment, additional financial support or waiver of future premiums after a covered event.
  • Premium Payment Terms: Weigh regular annual pay against limited pay structures, which allow you to extinguish premium obligations during peak earning years without straining post-retirement cash flow.

Selecting an Underwriter Built for Settlement Integrity

A life insurance contract is ultimately a legal promise evaluated at the moment of claim settlement. ICICI Prudential Life Insurance reported an individual claim settlement ratio of 99.34% for FY2025-26. For non-investigated retail death claims, the average turnaround time for claim decisioning was 1.1 days from receipt of the last required document.

Risk mitigation must always precede wealth accumulation. As lifestyle costs and household liabilities increase, pure life cover can serve as an important financial safeguard for families. Buying suitable term cover early in one’s career can help secure affordable long-term protection and provide financial support towards maintaining the family’s standard of living and important future milestones.
