NEW DELHI: Sesa Sterlite Limited, Jharsuguda has been conferred with the prestigious India CSR Community Initiative award for its CSR project for empowering rural women in the state of Odisha.

Pritam Motilal, Assistant Manager – CSR, Sesa Sterlite Limited, Jharsuguda received the award from Dr. Bhaskar Chatterjee, Director General & CEO, Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs and Rusen Kumar, Managing Editor, IndiaCSR and CSR & COMPETITIVENESS during the Annual India CSR Awards Ceremony held at PHD House, New Delhi on April 6, 2015. The award winning case study is also featured in special edition CSR & COMPETITIVENESS, March 2015. CSR & COMPETITIVENESS is publication of IndiaCSR group.

The Subhalaxmi CSR project is providing livelihood solutions to the affected and displaced households by promoting efficient, equitable, self-managed and sustainable opportunities through on-farm, off-farm and non-farm micro-enterprise development. As on date the cumulative savings of the cooperative is Rs 40 lakhs and the surplus earned is Rs 50 lakhs. In accumulation the cooperative is now maintaining its portfolio base of Rs 1.15 crore.

Subhalaxmi Cooperative: An Integrated Sustainable Path towards Empowering Rural Women

Subhalaxmi, a CSR project of Sesa Sterlite Jharsuguda, is a platform for women to empower themselves for the betterment for their lives, family & society at a large. Subhalaxmi Cooperative (Subhalaxmi Bahumukhee Mahila Samabaya Samiti Ltd) is a successful Corporate Social Responsibility project in the area of women empowerment initiated and supported by Sesa Sterlite Limited (Vadanta Aluminium & Power) under its Vedanta Integrated Jana Jeevika Yojana, a livelihood project.

Subhalaxmi cooperative is based on Self Help Group Cooperative model.  Till now 222 numbers of Self Help Groups are formed and strengthen under cooperative in 52 peripheral villages consisting 2650 members working at Jharsuguda, Kolabira and Kirmira Blocks covering 12 Gram Panchayats.

The cooperative is owned, controlled and managed by its members.  The cooperative was formed in the year of 2008 under Cooperative Society Act at District Registrar of Cooperative Society, Sambalpur. The aim of the cooperative is to provide need based financial services (savings, credit and insurance), business development services and suitable market linkages.

The project is providing livelihood solutions to the affected and displaced households by promoting efficient, equitable, self-managed and sustainable opportunities through on-farm, off-farm and non-farm micro-enterprise development. The project adopted a SHG-Cooperative model with a Livelihood-finance approach to achieve the purpose.

Through the platform of Subhalaxmi women are not only acting as a primarily obedient daughters, wives and mothers in the society, but also they are acting as women entrepreneurs in the modern society to make themselves independent and support family in the economic background and to keep social prestige. Subhalaxmi as a cooperative is playing a very important role in the empowerment of women through various activities.
