NEW DELHI: Korba West Power Company, Raigarh has been conferred with the prestigious India CSR Community Initiative award for its CSR project for empowering rural women with Livelihood initiative.
S.Sriniwas and Purnendu Kumar, Manager CSR of Korba West Power Company Ltd, Raigarh (Chhattigarh) received the award from Dr. Bhaskar Chatterjee, Director General & CEO, Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs and Rusen Kumar, Managing Editor, IndiaCSR and CSR & COMPETITIVENESS during the Annual India CSR Awards Ceremony held at PHD House, New Delhi on April 6, 2015.

Korba West Power Company Limited (KWPCL), a subsidiary of Avantha Power & Infrastructure Limited, is a power generation company based at Raigarh in the State of Chhattisgarh. KWPCL has recently commissioned its first 600MW Unit with its second unit of 600MW under implementation.KWPCL is also committed towards the environment and the community it operates in. It has successfully implemented several community welfare schemes in the field of livelihood, infrastructure, community health and education which has so far benefited over 60,000 people from close to 76 villages.
Basically, this article deals with empowerment of rural women through poultry farming. How economic empowerment of rural women led to development of family and community at large.Women entrepreneurship represents a huge untapped source of innovation and job creation.
KWPCL under its CSR initiatives took a distinctive approach for women’s empowerment through formation of a purely women based multipurpose cooperative supporting various income generation activities by women under one umbrella. Mahanadi Grameen Mahila Bahuddeshiya Sahkari Samiti (MGMBSS) is one of the institutions, which is by origin member-driven and strives to create many more women entrepreneurs. Accessing credit, training, networks and information, as well as legal and policy constraints are the barriers to women’s entrepreneurship and KWPCL’s project progress in narrowing such gaps between women and entrepreneurs.
MGMBSS is now has membership of 850 women and supports various income generation activities like poultry farming, mushroom cultivation, cutting & tailoring etc. MGMBSS has successfully established forward and backward linkages for poultry farming and received appreciation from Department of Agriculture and Horticulture jointly.
