UDAIPUR (India CSR): Hindustan Zinc Limited, India’s largest and the world’s second-largest integrated zinc producer, showcased its excellence at the 53rd All India Mine Rescue Competition held at Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), Dhanbad. The company clinched 11 prestigious awards, including the top position in the overall metal mines category, marking its third consecutive win at the national-level competition.

1 A Dominant Performance in Mine Safety

The competition, organized by the Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS), featured 32 teams from across India. Hindustan Zinc’s men’s team from the Rampura Agucha mine secured the first position in the overall metal mines category. This achievement reinforces the company’s leadership in mine safety and rescue operations.

“We are proud of our teams for their resilience, technical expertise, and dedication to safety,” said a Hindustan Zinc spokesperson.

2 Women’s Teams Excel

Hindustan Zinc’s commitment to gender inclusivity shone through with its pioneering women’s teams. The company fielded two all-women rescue teams, including the second team from the Rampura Agucha cluster, which secured second place in the women’s category. This follows the success of the first all-women underground mine rescue team, which won the top spot in the 52nd edition of the competition.

3 Multiple Awards Across Categories

Hindustan Zinc’s teams excelled in various challenging tasks, earning first-place honours in:

  • Best in First Aid
  • Best Fresh Air Base
  • Best in Theory
  • Best in Statutory Tasks

These accolades reflect the company’s robust training programs, adherence to international safety standards, and focus on real-time monitoring and automated safety procedures.

4 Innovations in Mine Safety

The company continues to lead with groundbreaking safety initiatives. Hindustan Zinc has established India’s first underground first-aid station with an ambulance and deployed technologies like tele-remote drilling to enhance safety. By leveraging Industry 4.0, robotics, and artificial intelligence, the company is transforming workplace safety across its operations.

“Our focus on cutting-edge technology and behaviour-based safety ensures a safer and more efficient working environment,” added a company official.

5 Global Recognition in Mine Safety

Earlier this year, Hindustan Zinc’s all-women rescue team represented India at the International Mines Rescue Competition in Columbia, securing second place in the women’s taskforce category. This marked India’s debut on the global stage and highlighted Hindustan Zinc’s efforts to set international benchmarks.

6 Driving Sustainability and Innovation

As a Vedanta Group company, Hindustan Zinc is not only a leader in mining but also in sustainability. Recognized as the world’s most sustainable company in the metals and mining sector by the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment 2023, the company is setting new standards with its EcoZen brand, Asia’s first low-carbon zinc.

“We aim to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2050 and continue driving innovations that contribute to a sustainable future,” said the company.

By setting new benchmarks in mine rescue operations and sustainability, the company is paving the way for a safer and more equitable mining industry.
