Happy Navratri - Maa Durga
Share Share Share Share

Navratri is celebrated to honour the goddess and seek her blessings for prosperity, happiness and success.

Happy Navratri 2024: Navratri is a nine-day festival that celebrates the nine forms of Goddess Durga and her victory over evil. It is one of the most auspicious and vibrant festivals in the Hindu calendar, observed with great devotion and enthusiasm across India. This year, Navratri begins on October 15th and ends on October 24th with Dussehra.

What is Navratri and why is it celebrated?

Navratri means “nine nights” in Sanskrit, and each night is dedicated to a different aspect of the divine feminine power or Shakti. The nine forms of Goddess Durga are Shailputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayini, Kaalratri, Mahagauri and Siddhidhatri. Each of these forms represents a quality or attribute of the goddess, such as courage, wisdom, beauty, wealth, motherhood, etc.

Navratri is celebrated to honour the goddess and seek her blessings for prosperity, happiness and success. It is also a time to celebrate the triumph of good over evil, as Durga defeated the demon Mahishasura after a fierce battle that lasted for nine days and nights. The tenth day of Navratri is called Dussehra or Vijayadashami, which marks the victory of Lord Rama over Ravana in the epic Ramayana.

How is Navratri celebrated?

Navratri is celebrated in different ways across India, depending on the region and culture. Some of the common rituals and customs are:

  • Fasting: Many devotees observe fasts on all nine days or on specific days of Navratri to show their devotion and gratitude to the goddess. They eat only fruits, nuts, milk and certain dishes made from sago, buckwheat or amaranth flour.
  • Puja: People perform puja or worship at home or in temples, offering flowers, fruits, sweets and other items to the goddess. They also recite mantras, sing bhajans and perform aarti to invoke her presence and grace.
  • Garba and Dandiya: These are traditional folk dances that originated in Gujarat and are popular during Navratri. People dress up in colourful clothes and jewellery and dance in circles with sticks or claps to the tunes of festive songs.
  • Golu: This is a display of dolls and figurines that depict various scenes from Hindu mythology, culture and history. It is mainly done in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh during Navratri. People invite their friends and relatives to see their golu and exchange gifts and prasad.
  • Ramlila: This is a theatrical performance of the story of Ramayana that takes place over several nights during Navratri. It culminates on Dussehra with the burning of effigies of Ravana and his brothers.
