Gurugram – To solve problems of hunger, malnutrition and food wastage, Gurugram-based quick service restaurant (QSR) – Koolchas has launched a scheme of ‘suspended meals’ to provide free food and drink to the needy in the city.
Under this scheme, Koolchas is offering 21 free meals daily at each of its outlets in Gurugram. The meals will be prepared afresh based on a menu specially curated for this cause. The scheme is being through company’s own sources and also through voluntary donations by the customers.
Incorporated in 2018, the brand aims to serve fresh and tasteful dishes with Kulche (a kind of bread), along with homemade and fresh vegetables to ensure that the food is hygienic.
However, the scheme is only applicable for the needy.
Suspended meal is based on an Italian concept – ‘caffe sospeso’ or pending coffee where the payment is made in advance, as an anonymous act of charity.
Co-founder Gaurav Bahl said that the company has replicated the model to not only provide food to the needy but also solve the problem of food wastage. The idea is also to provide nutrition rich food and reduce health hazards, Bahl said.
“We have many customers who are supporting this initiative and I feel extremely grateful with the good response we have received,” Bahl added. People are encouraged to donate at least INR 1 as a goodwill gesture. He called for more donations to help sustain the scheme.
