NEW DELHI (India CSR): The Grameen Bharat Mahotsav 2025, a flagship event by the Department of Financial Services (DFS) in collaboration with NABARD, concluded with a vibrant closing ceremony at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. Held from January 4 to January 9, the six-day event celebrated the growth and potential of rural India, reinforcing the government’s vision of a “Viksit Bharat” by 2047.

Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi alongside Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Minister of State for Finance Shri Pankaj Chaudhary, the Mahotsav brought together policymakers, financial institutions, and grassroots entrepreneurs to discuss and showcase initiatives aimed at rural empowerment.

Stalls by institutions like the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) generated significant interest, while the “Village in the Heart of Delhi” experience captured visitors’ imaginations, with notable sales of artisanal goods.

Key Exhibits:

  • GI-tagged Products: Promoting India’s heritage goods in global markets.
  • Organic Farming Innovations: Highlighting sustainable farming techniques.

  • Day 2: Scaling Organic Agriculture and Strengthening Cooperatives – NABARD’s efforts in digitizing 67,000 cooperative societies were spotlighted.
  • Day 3: Empowering Rural Women Entrepreneurs – Initiatives like “Lakhpati Didi” demonstrated how financial inclusion and digital tools can elevate women-led enterprises.
  • Day 4: Tribal Legacy and Market Development – Discussions on modernizing tribal crafts and accessing Social Stock Exchanges took center stage.
  • Day 5: North East Economic Potential – Chanchal Kumar, Secretary of DoNER, emphasized infrastructure development, eco-tourism, and branding of regional products.
  • Day 6: Financing for Rural Growth – Experts discussed de-risking investments, developing innovative financial instruments, and fostering sustainable small enterprises.

Championing Rural Resilience

Speaking at the event, Nirmala Sitharaman, Union Finance Minister, remarked:

“Grameen Bharat Mahotsav 2025 stands as a testament to the entrepreneurial spirit and cultural richness of our villages. Initiatives such as GI-tagged products, organic farming, and women-led enterprises are pivotal to sustainable growth. A prosperous rural economy is key to our journey toward a $10 trillion economy by 2047.”

M. Nagaraju, Secretary of DFS, highlighted:

“With over 53 crore Jan Dhan accounts and 14.4 million SHGs, rural India holds immense potential for economic progress. By fostering financial inclusion and supporting MSMEs that employ over 50 million people, we are building an inclusive, self-reliant Bharat.”

Action Points for Rural Development

The Mahotsav concluded with six actionable goals aimed at accelerating rural progress:

  1. Innovation Lab: NABARD will establish a dedicated lab to implement innovative rural development projects.
  2. Value Chain Creation: Prioritizing rural product value chains with support from financial institutions.
  3. Comprehensive Information Portal: NABARD will develop a multilingual portal for rural schemes and services.
  4. E-Commerce Expansion: Supporting GI and organic groups through digital platforms and e-commerce channels.
  5. Area-wise Studies: Conducting assessments to enhance rural marts and Common Facility Centres (CFCs).
  6. Market Positioning: Identifying and promoting unique selling propositions (USPs) of rural products.

Recognizing Excellence and Enabling Digital Access

Several states were awarded for their exceptional contributions to rural innovation. The E-Commerce Hub initiative stood out, empowering rural artisans, SHGs, and Producer Organisations (POs) by enabling them to list products on platforms like the NABARD-supported Mystore App via ONDC.

During the Mahotsav, ONDC received 41 proposals, with 25 producers onboarded and 2 enterprises going live. Workshops on agriculture, financial inclusion, and tech-driven growth highlighted rural entrepreneurship and skill development, particularly for women.

Shaji KV, Chairman of NABARD, expressed:

“This Mahotsav showcased the vibrant energy of rural India, from organic innovations to cooperative digitization. Unlocking Grameen Bharat’s potential requires robust financing, partnerships, and empowering rural entrepreneurs.”

A Vision for an Inclusive Future

The Grameen Bharat Mahotsav 2025 serves as a milestone in India’s journey toward economic inclusivity and rural empowerment. By highlighting the resilience and creativity of rural communities, the event has paved the way for future innovations in governance and grassroots entrepreneurship.

You might be wondering, “What can I do to support this movement?” Sharing stories of innovation and resilience can amplify the impact and inspire more stakeholders to participate.
