Enhanced Privacy Controls for Swiss Users Starting July 2024
NEW DELHI (India CSR): In a recent announcement, Google has outlined significant changes to its EU User Consent Policy, set to take effect from July 31, 2024. These modifications expand the policy’s reach to include users in Switzerland, aligning with the ongoing industry-wide shift towards heightened privacy standards across Europe.
Understanding the Changes
Google’s EU User Consent Policy, originally designed to comply with the European Economic Area (EEA) and UK regulations, mandates advertisers to secure explicit user consent for the use of cookies, local storage, and the collection, sharing, and utilization of personal data for ad personalization. Starting next summer, these requirements will extend to include Swiss users, reflecting the evolving expectations regarding user privacy and data control in Europe.

What’s changing?
From July 31, 2024, advertisers will be required to obtain Swiss users’ consent to the use of cookies or local storage, where legally required; and for the collection, sharing and use of personal data used for ads personalization. This is the existing requirement for European Economic Area (EEA) and UK users, and there is nothing changing about our requirements for these locations, Google informed its partners today.

Implications for Advertisers and Analytics Users
This expansion means that any entity using Google ads or analytics products will need to ensure they are compliant with the updated policy by obtaining the necessary consents from Swiss users, similar to the current practices in the EEA and the UK. It’s crucial for advertisers and businesses to prepare for these changes to avoid disruptions and ensure seamless service continuity.

Additional Information for Google Product Users
It’s important to note that these updates are specific to Google’s ads and analytics platforms. Users of other Google services, such as Google Workspace or Cloud Identity, will not be affected by these changes. The update is part of Google’s ongoing commitment to transparency and user control over personal data, aiming to bolster trust and ensure a more privacy-focused online environment.
