DHENKANAL (Odisha): In order to promote quality education in periphery villagers, GMR Kamalanga Energy Limited has taken numerous initiatives in Mangalpur Panchayat of Dhenkanal district .
GMR has established a English medium school in Mnagalpur Panchayat to impart quality education to children living in periphery villages and in its township. This is a CBSC affiliated school and is being run by DAV management. At present, 129 children are enrolled in the DAV School from LKG to 6th Std.
In addition to setting up the school, support has been provided to eight primary schools and two high school, 16 Anganawadi to enhance the quality classroom processes. Nine support teachers provided by GMR Varalakshmi Foundation, a non-profit CSR arm of GMR Group to Government Primary Schools where student and teacher ratio is low.
Teachers training programs were organized to develop the pedagogical knowledge and skills of teachers and raise their motivational level to attain age specific learning outcomes at elementary level. Similarly, computer learning centers have been set up for primary and high school students. GMR Varalaskhmi Foundation, has provided computers, accessories and teachers to these centers.
The Foundation in collaboration with IBM is running two kids smart center at Kamalanga and Mangalpur, which provide opportunity to students to learn by using technology enabled learning resources. With the help of GMRVF, two after school learning centers are running in Kamalanga and Manpur village where extra classes are being taken in three subjects namely mathematics, science and English. Six teachers are engaged to take classes in these centers. A total of 167 students are benefiting from these centers.
GMRVF has provided additional class rooms, sports materials, library books, magazines and newspapers to all the schools in Mangalpur Panchayat. Scouts and guide units has been started in two high schools at Kamalanga and Mangalpur Panchayat High School. GMRVF provides all help to primary and high schools for organizing science exhibitions, talent search competitions, publication of school magazine. Electrification work in six primary schools and one high school was undertaken and adequate number of ceiling fan provided to the schools. Cycle stands constructed in two high school and playground equipment installed in eight primary schools. Every year high school test papers are distributed to 10th class students for better performance in HSC examination.
In order to develop love for learning, creativity sessions are organized regularly. To popularize science among primary and high school students, practical experiments, demonstrations and science exhibitions are organized in schools in collaboration with Dhenkanal Regional Science Centre, Odisha. GMRVF provides all help to the schools to organize annual sports day, Republic Day, Environment Day, Teachers Day and organizes different competitions and events for students.
To strengthen Anganawadi centers, GMRVF has provided teaching learning kits and toys to children. Similarly, utensils and uniforms provided to all Anganawadi children. Steel Aalmira, First Aid Box, Weighing machine have been provided to 16 Anganawadi centers.
GMRVF, Program Leader, Mr. Jayant Kumar Mohanty said,” Since last five years, we have made significant investment to enhance quality of education in ten government schools. We are trying our best to attain age specific leaning outcomes at elementary and secondary level and developing creativity among the children in Mangalpur Panchayat. We will continue the same activities in the coming years.”
