Located in Mahim (West), near major children’s hospitals, the 3,200 sq. ft. house has 16 furnished rooms and can support over 500 families every year.

MUMBAI (India CSR): Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC), a global non-profit organisation known for its philanthropy and commitment to supporting families of children undergoing medical treatment, has opened its first Ronald McDonald House in India. Located in Mahim, Mumbai, the new facility will provide free accommodation and essential support to families of hospitalised children.

A Global Mission Reaches India

The launch marks RMHC’s entry into India after five decades of global operations across 62 countries. The new Ronald McDonald House aims to create a “home away from home” for families traveling long distances for their children’s treatment, providing comfort, stability, and emotional support during difficult times.

Inauguration by Maharashtra Minister Ashish Shelar

The facility was inaugurated by Advocate Ashish Shelar, Minister for Information Technology, Government of Maharashtra, in the presence of Bhushan Gagrani, Municipal Commissioner (BMC); Dr. Kailash Sharma, Dean (Projects), Tata Memorial Hospital; and Smita Jatia, Chairwoman, Ronald McDonald House India.

“This house fulfills a long-standing need with kindness and compassion. Many families struggle to afford accommodation near hospitals. This model shows what humanity can achieve,” Shelar said during the event.

Facility Details

Built on a 3,200 sq. ft. area, the Mahim House features 16 fully furnished rooms and can host more than 500 families annually. Families will receive free stay, nutritious meals, hospital transport, counselling, and 24×7 staff support. The facility also includes a communal kitchen, play areas, and shared spaces designed to promote healing and connection among families facing similar challenges.

Smita Jatia, Chairwoman of Ronald McDonald House India, described the opening as a “historic milestone.”

“Since our first Family Room at BJ Wadia Hospital in 2016, we have dreamed of building a Ronald McDonald House in India. Today, that dream is reality. Families heal better together, and this house will help them find strength and comfort when they need it most,”

Relief for Families

Families who previously struggled with accommodation challenges near hospitals welcomed the initiative. “We used to sleep outside hospitals and worry about safety and food. Now, we can focus fully on our child’s recovery,” said one parent whose child is undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital.

Future Expansion Plans

RMHC India currently operates Family Rooms at BJ Wadia Hospital, Mumbai, and Government Cancer Hospital, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, supporting thousands of families annually. By 2030, the organisation aims to establish three Family Rooms and five Ronald McDonald Houses across five major cities in India, offering safe, affordable, and compassionate spaces for families of sick children.

The launch of India’s first Ronald McDonald House is not just about infrastructure, it is about creating spaces where families find hope, strength, and the power to heal together.
