DHEKANAL: (Odisha): In a bid to stimulate awareness among the company employees and the local people, GMR Kamalanga Energy Limited (GKEL) had organized a week-long program on fire prevention. As part of Fire Prevention Week celebrated from April 14-20, the GKEL was encouraging people to make a special effort to control their fires this week and all the year long.
GKEL, which is setting up a 1,400 MW coal-based Thermal Power plant at Kamalanga had organized a series of quiz competition programs on fire prevention among school children at Kamalanga, Achalkot, Manpur and GMR Varalakshmi DAV School and gave away prizes to the winners. During the awareness program, GKEL firefighters demonstrated the techniques that they use to control hazardous fire and save civilian population and property. As part the awareness, GKEL conducted mock drill to control fire incidents and oriented students to take precautionary measures to avoid fire accidents.
“Fire accidents are common incidents during summer season in Odisha. Fire victims suffer a lot due to carelessness and ignorance of methods of fire safety. Therefore, we in GKEL felt that it is our moral duty to make our plant site villagers aware about the causes of fire accidents and methods of fire control through knowledge and information sharing and promoting collective action at the village level,” Mr. Jayanta Kumar Panigrahi (Associate Vice President & Project Coordinator), GKEL, said.
Distributing prizes to DAV school students, Mr. Nageswara Rao, Associate Vice-President, Mechanical, GKEL, urged the school children not to be careless while dealing with fire and learn and practice the basic fire safety measures to avoid accidents.
Mr. R. Behera (Asst. Director Factory & Boiler), Mr. Sanatan Senapati, General Manager, General Administration & External Environment, Mr. Haresh Kumar Pattnaik (GM, Mechanical) Mr. Ravikula Shyam K (AGM, Corporate Relations) & Mr. Susanta Sahoo ( AGM, Safety) were present during the mock drill exercise. GMR Varalakshmi Foundation, a non-profit CSR arm of GMR Group, employees helped in organizing the program in the schools and participated in the week long celebration.
