The most unique aspects of JSPL’s CSR initiatives in the health sector include setting up of a rehabilitation centre for special children and family planning and birth control camps
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has been making meaningful contributions to the society in different areas, for decades now. CSR activities at Jindal Steel & Power Limited (JSPL) extend well beyond its business objectives, and the company’s concerns for the society are evident from the various initiatives it has taken in different fields.
Rural healthcare and support is a prime area of the organizations concern. The most unique aspects of JSPL’s health initiatives include a rehabilitation centre for special children in Chhattisgarh and family planning camps in and around the company’s plants in Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Odisha.
The aim of the rehabilitation centre – ASHA – is to create an inclusive model for empowering children with disabilities. This centre is benefiting 2,480 special children in Raigarh district of Chhattisgarh.
The services being provided are Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Special Education, Speech Therapy, Audiometry, Computer Training, Music and Recreational Therapy, Counseling and Guidance.
JSPL also organizes camps for physically challenged persons, wherein patients are provided treatment and distributed assistive equipment like Tricycle, Wheelchairs, Crutches and Hearing Aids. Significant contribution has also been made by JSPL in population control.
Family planning camps have been organized for individuals willing to undergo birth control operations. Other activities include distribution of condoms and education on its usage through Mobile Medical Vans, propagation of the merits of Family Planning through various Adult Education programmes etc.
A vital aspect of community need is served by JSPL through Rural Medical Camps, which are organized four times in a quarter with a specialist. Free medicines are distributed and critical patients identified are referred to hospitals for further specialized treatment.
Eradication of blindness is also a challenge that JSPL is addressing in Chhattisgarh. In this regard, the company organizes regular eye care and cataract camps in various villages.
To make medical facilities available to the common man, JSPL has also set up many charitable clinics and hospitals in Raigarh district. An ICU unit at the general hospital at Raigarh has been set up.
World-class health facilities are provided to the people of Raigarh at the 100-bed multi-specialty O. P. Jindal Hospital & Research Centre.
The disciplinary facilities include: medicine, surgery, gynaecology, orthopedics and pediatrics. The hospital has four well-equipped Operation Theatres, a Cardiac ICU, a Burn ICU and a Neo-natal ICU. It plans to launch a comprehensive pathological and other investigation facilities such as X-Ray lab, ECHO colour Doppler, Endoscopy, CT–Scan.
Other health initiatives taken by the company are:

Regular daily health check-up camps in 22 locations in 12 villages.
Mega health check-up camp with specialist doctors organized in 8 villages, once in two months.
Specialized health check-up camp for Cataract Eye Operation – 115 patients operated successfully.
Family Planning Services – counseling, distribution of contraceptives, planning for operation, awareness campaign.
Organizing eye screening camps in 16 schools.
Already, glasses have been distributed to 71 students.
Pulse polio vaccination and HIV/AIDS detection camps are organized from time to time in Raigarh, Patratu and Angul.
Blood samples of all workmen are examined.
Suspected cases have been referred to agencies for counseling and further treatment.
