MUMBAI (India CSR): On the occasion of World Cancer Day, The Centre for Environmental Research and Education (CERE), in partnership with BNP Paribas India, unveiled a transformative solar energy project at the Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research, and Education in Cancer (ACTREC). This initiative, part of CERE’s Switch on Solar (SoS) program, is not just about harnessing the sun’s power—it’s about lighting up lives, advancing cancer research, and protecting our planet.

A Solar-Powered Future for Cancer Care

ACTREC, a leading cancer research and treatment facility under the Tata Memorial Centre, is now home to a state-of-the-art 996 kWp solar photovoltaic (PV) system. Installed in three phases, this project is a game-changer for sustainable healthcare.

  • Phase 1 (2023-24): Completed installation of 327 kWp on two buildings, generating 488,337 units of electricity in the first year.
  • Phase 2 (2024-25): Ongoing installation of 365 kWp on RRS and Ward buildings.
  • Phase 3 (2025-26): Planned installation of 305 kWp, completing the total capacity.

Over its 25-year lifespan, the system is expected to generate 34.4 million units of electricity, saving approximately INR 35 crores and offsetting 30,900 metric tons of carbon emissions.

Why Solar Energy Matters for Healthcare

Hospitals like ACTREC are energy-intensive, relying on electricity for advanced diagnostic equipment, 24/7 operations, and climate-controlled environments. By switching to solar power, ACTREC not only reduces its carbon footprint but also ensures a reliable, clean energy source.

The financial savings from this initiative will be redirected to provide free cancer treatment to thousands of underprivileged patients annually. This dual benefit—environmental and social—makes the project a shining example of sustainable development in action.

Voices of Change

Sanjay Singh, CEO and Head of Territory at BNP Paribas India, shared his enthusiasm: “This project reflects our commitment to a Net Zero future. By supporting ACTREC’s solarisation, we’re not just reducing carbon emissions—we’re enabling the hospital to expand its outreach to economically disadvantaged communities.”

Dr. Rashneh Pardiwala, Founder and Director of CERE, added, “Our Switch on Solar initiative is about empowering institutions to adopt renewable energy. ACTREC’s solarisation is a model for others to follow, aligning with global goals like affordable clean energy and climate action.”

Aligning with India’s Green Vision

This collaboration is a step toward India’s ambitious renewable energy targets. The National Electricity Plan aims for 50% of installed power capacity to come from non-fossil fuels by 2030. Initiatives like the Suryodaya Yojana, which promotes rooftop solar installations, further underscore the nation’s commitment to a sustainable future.

A Brighter Tomorrow

The ACTREC solarisation project is more than just an environmental milestone—it’s a testament to the power of collaboration. By combining CERE’s expertise in renewable energy with BNP Paribas’ philanthropic vision, this initiative is setting a precedent for sustainable healthcare in India.

As the sun powers ACTREC’s life-saving work, it also lights the way for a greener, healthier future. Together, we can turn the tide against cancer and climate change, one solar panel at a time.
