The carbon black industry is on a transformative journey to achieve greater sustainability, efficiency, and performance. Driven by advancements in materials and processing, as well as an increased emphasis on circular economy principles, the industry is evolving to meet its environmental responsibilities. With a focus on sustainable product development, innovative processing technologies, and increased digitalization, the industry is working toward a more sustainable future.

Introduction to Sustainability Efforts in Carbon Black

As the global focus on sustainability intensifies, industries are recognizing the need to enhance their environmental impact. The carbon black industry, which plays a crucial role in various applications, is no exception. Sustainability efforts are centered around reducing emissions, adopting circular economy principles, and implementing technological advancements. This commitment to sustainability aligns with global efforts to curb environmental impact and improve efficiency.

Product Responsibility and Innovation

Birla Carbon is focusing on product responsibility, emphasizing safety and stewardship in its operations. Their approach spans two key areas: ensuring the safety of carbon black products for customer use and complying with health and safety regulations. Product safety helps customers handle carbon black effectively and safely, and Birla Carbon has implemented robust programs to ensure employee safety as well.

The company’s Product Stewardship Standard requires enhanced testing intervals for all products. Carbon black samples are regularly sent to a laboratory in Marietta, USA, for testing and full traceability through a laboratory information management system. Product stewards enforce the standard on-site, with a focus on employee training and progress monitoring through annual assessments.

“Share the Future will emphasize a collaborative approach with our stakeholders and new partners to deliver customer – facing solutions for a sustainable and circular world.โ€, the company sustainability report said.

Innovation and Environmental Stewardship

Birla Carbon’s stewardship approach also extends to carbon nanotubes (CNT), which are managed with similar standards as carbon black and other sustainable carbon products. The absence of food or skin contact use-cases for CNTs makes managing their environmental impact relatively easier.

The company has established a Product Review Committee, which meets quarterly to review certified products and ensure compliance with commercial requirements. The Management of Change Standard ensures that any changes in the manufacturing process are formally documented to minimize potential impacts on the product and maintain high standards.

Share the Future: A Sustainable Strategy

Birla Carbon’s ‘Share the Future’ sustainability strategy aims to guide the company into the 2030s and beyond. This future-focused initiative emphasizes environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles, with innovation at its core. The strategy builds on the legacy of Sustainable Operational Excellence (SOE), which delivered significant results and positioned Birla Carbon for a journey toward achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Under ‘Share the Future,’ Birla Carbon prioritizes reducing emissions, scaling circularity, and exploring new markets like energy systems and Sustainable Carbonaceous Material (SCM). The company aims to foster collaboration with stakeholders and new partners to deliver customer-focused solutions that support a circular and sustainable world.

Progress Towards Targets

Birla Carbon’s ongoing progress includes retaining a Net Promoter Score above the threshold of 35, demonstrating customer satisfaction and the effectiveness of its sustainability efforts. Additionally, the company continues to refine its sustainability initiatives, driving forward with an emphasis on innovation and collaboration.

A Year in Review: Sustainability in Action

The ‘Sustainability In Action’ report, approved by Birla Carbon’s Senior Management Team (SMT), reflects the company’s sustainability journey for the period between April 2023 and March 2024. The report, produced in line with GRI 2021 Standards, aims to engage stakeholders and highlight how Birla Carbon’s innovative and environmentally sound products are contributing to a more sustainable world.

With ongoing innovations, strong stewardship policies, and a collaborative approach, Birla Carbon is working to lead the carbon black industry toward a greener and more sustainable future. By emphasizing safety, stewardship, and technological advancements, the company aims to contribute significantly to the industry’s sustainability goals.
