Australia continues to be a top destination for Indian travellers, whether for sightseeing along the Great Ocean Road, attending business conferences in Sydney, or making quick transit connections across the Pacific. In 2025, important changes to visa costs and processing policies were introduced, affecting short-term visitors in particular.

With rising travel expenses globally, understanding the latest updates is crucial for effective trip planning. Notably, from July 1, 2025, skilled visa income thresholds are set to rise by 4.6%, signalling broader shifts in Australia’s immigration and economic policies, even as short-term visa fees also see adjustments.

What Has Changed in 2025?

This year, the Australian government has implemented new fee structures across various visa categories. While most headlines have focused on significant hikes in student and work visa fees, short-term visas, including those relevant to Indian tourists and business visitors, have also seen updates.

Here’s a snapshot comparison of popular short-term visa categories:

Visa Type2024 Fee (AUD)2025 Fee (AUD)Change (%)
Tourist Visa (Subclass 600 – Visitor Stream)150190+26.6%
Business Visa (Subclass 600 – Business Stream)150190+26.6%
Transit Visa (Subclass 771)00No Change

The hike of AUD 40 may seem modest, but when combined with service fees, currency fluctuations, and additional charges, the total cost for Indian applicants can increase noticeably. The Transit Visa, fortunately, remains free of charge, but requires travellers to meet strict criteria.

Why the Change?

The increase in visa fees is part of the Australian government’s broader effort to recover administrative and operational costs. Rising inflation, digital transformation of immigration services, and the expansion of compliance systems have all contributed to these adjustments.

Moreover, 2025 marks a shift in how Australia manages inbound travellers. The country’s ten-year migration strategy aims to streamline temporary migration while generating additional revenue through application charges. These moves reflect a global trend: as countries modernise their immigration infrastructure, travellers shoulder more of the cost.

Australia Visa Fees Breakdown for Indians

As of 2025, understanding the Australia visa cost is crucial for Indian citizens applying for short-term entry. Below is a breakdown of current fees, processing times, and basic inclusions for each relevant visa category.

Tourist Visa (Subclass 600 – Visitor Stream)

  • Fee: AUD 190 (~INR 10,200)
  • Processing Time: 15-25 days
  • Inclusions: Multiple-entry or single-entry options, valid for up to 12 months (depending on application specifics)

Business Visitor Visa (Subclass 600 – Business Stream)

  • Fee: AUD 190 (~INR 10,200)
  • Processing Time: 10-20 days
  • Inclusions: Short-term stay for business negotiations, attending seminars or trade fairs; does not allow employment

Transit Visa (Subclass 771)

  • Fee: Free
  • Processing Time: 5-10 days
  • Inclusions: Transit through Australia for up to 72 hours; applicable only if continuing to a third country and holding a confirmed booking

Do note that all fees are payable in Australian dollars and may vary slightly depending on exchange rates and service provider charges.

Impact on Indian Tourists and Business Travellers

For Indian travellers, especially families and solo tourists on a budget, the increased fees can affect overall trip costs. While the hike might seem minimal on paper, travellers should account for currency volatility and bundled service charges.

Business travellers, who often travel on short notice, may also feel the pressure of higher costs and expedited service charges.

Tips to Offset the Cost:

  • Book visas well in advance to avoid premium processing fees.
  • Bundle insurance with visa services to save on combined packages.
  • Tracking currency trends and booking when the INR is strong against AUD can help save.
  • Use government-approved visa services to avoid unnecessary third-party markups.

Application Tips to Avoid Rejection or Delay

Many Indian applicants face visa delays due to documentation errors or incomplete submissions. Here’s how to stay ahead:

Essential Documents Checklist:

  • Valid passport with at least 6 months’ validity
  • Completed visa application form (online)
  • Recent passport-sized photographs
  • Proof of funds (bank statements, income tax returns)
  • Travel itinerary and hotel bookings
  • Letter of invitation (for business travellers)
  • Confirmed onward ticket (for transit visa)

Common Rejection Reasons:

  • Insufficient funds or unverifiable financials
  • Incomplete or incorrect application form
  • Mismatch between travel intent and supporting documents
  • Booking through unverified platforms or agents

Ensure that all documents are clear, up to date, and in the correct format before submission.

Additional Costs to Consider

The base visa fee isn’t the only cost. Several additional expenses may apply, and first-time applicants often overlook them.

Additional ServiceEstimated Cost (INR)
Biometrics collection₹1,200-₹2,000
Medical examination (if required)₹3,000-₹6,000
Courier & document return fees₹500-₹1,000
Police clearance certificate₹500-₹1,000
Health/travel insurance (recommended)₹10,000-₹25,000/year
Currency conversion and transaction fees~1%-3% of the total payment

Using a debit/credit card with low forex markup or services like UPI-based international payments can help minimise transaction charges.

Conclusion

With Australia emerging as a key destination for Indian tourists and business professionals alike, staying informed about the visa cost for Australia is more crucial than ever in 2025. The updated fee structure reflects a broader shift toward digital, cost-recovery-based immigration models, and travellers must adapt accordingly.

Whether you’re planning a family holiday to Melbourne, a transit stopover in Perth, or a business meeting in Sydney, early preparation and budgeting will ensure a smoother, stress-free journey.

Keep an eye on further updates, as political decisions post the 2025 elections could lead to additional changes in visa policies or fees. In the meantime, plan, apply smartly, and make the most of your Australia travel experience.
