Alyssa Carson has pursued her dream of becoming one of the first humans on Mars since she was a toddler, dedicating her life to space exploration.

To inspire the next generation of explorers, sometimes all you need is one incredible, real-life story.

Fueling the Next Generation: In every classroom, there’s a student with a universe of potential waiting to be unlocked. As STEM educators, we’re always searching for that spark—a story, a role model, a real-life hero who can turn a flicker of curiosity into a blazing passion. Look no further than Alyssa Carson. More than just a dreamer, Alyssa is a doer, a trailblazer for the “Mars Generation” who has been methodically and passionately pursuing her goal of becoming one of the first humans on Mars since she was a toddler. Her journey is a living lesson plan in ambition, persistence, and the power of STEM.

Here are 10 incredible facts about Alyssa Carson that you can share to inspire your own students.

Her Mars Dream Began at Age Three

While most kids are learning to count, Alyssa was captivated by the idea of another world. After watching an episode of the cartoon The Backyardigans titled “Mission to Mars,” she turned to her father and declared, “Daddy, I want to be an astronaut and be one of the people that go to Mars.” This simple moment shows that inspiration can strike at any age and from the most unexpected places.

She’s a “Grand Slam” NASA Alumna

Alyssa didn’t just attend a NASA Space Camp; she conquered them all. She is the first person in history to complete the NASA Passport Program, which involved visiting all 14 NASA Visitor Centers across nine states. Her commitment at such a young age demonstrates a level of dedication that most adults would find daunting.

Her Official Call Sign is “Blueberry”

This fun, humanizing fact makes her incredibly relatable. During her first space camp, she couldn’t find a flight suit that fit, so she chose a custom blue one. The name stuck, and she has embraced it ever since. Her organization is even called the Blueberry Foundation. It’s a great reminder that even in the serious world of science, there’s room for personality and fun.

The Youngest-Ever Graduate of the Advanced PoSSUM Academy

At just 15, Alyssa was accepted into the prestigious Advanced PoSSUM (Polar Suborbital Science in the Upper Mesosphere) Academy. She became the youngest person ever to be certified to go to space as a scientist-astronaut candidate. It’s a testament to her philosophy, as she often says:
“Age is just a number. It’s your determination and the work you put in that matters.”

She’s Trained for Microgravity and High-G Forces

Her training isn’t just theoretical. Alyssa has undergone extensive practical training, including microgravity flights, high-G force simulations, water survival courses, and decompression training. She has prepared her body and mind for the extreme conditions of spaceflight, showing students that a STEM career can be physically adventurous, not just mentally challenging.

She’s a Licensed Pilot and Certified Scuba Diver

Understanding exploration means mastering different environments. Alyssa earned her pilot’s license to understand the principles of flight and became a certified advanced scuba diver to experience a sense of weightlessness and work in a challenging, life-support-dependent environment—much like space. This holistic approach shows how different scientific disciplines overlap and support one another.

She’s an Author and a Global Speaker

Alyssa isn’t just living her dream; she’s actively helping others pursue theirs. She authored the book So, You Want to Be an Astronaut and gives TEDx talks and speeches around the world. She breaks down her complex journey into actionable steps, empowering other young people to follow their own ambitious paths.

She’s a University Student of Astrobiology

Her passion is backed by serious academic rigor. Alyssa is currently studying astrobiology at the Florida Institute of Technology. Her choice of major—the study of life in the universe—perfectly aligns with her goal of searching for evidence of life on Mars. She’s a powerful example of how higher education is the launchpad for achieving highly specialized goals.

She Founded the Blueberry Foundation

Understanding the importance of paying it forward, Alyssa created the Blueberry Foundation. Its mission is to provide opportunities and support for young people who are passionate about their dreams but may lack the resources to pursue them. She is building a community and fostering the next generation of leaders and explorers.

She Is the Face of the “Mars Generation”

Alyssa embodies a paradigm shift. For her generation, traveling to Mars isn’t science fiction; it’s an engineering and logistics problem to be solved. She represents a mindset of boundless possibility, one that every student should be encouraged to adopt. As she powerfully states: “Always follow your dream and don’t let anyone take it from you.”

Alyssa Carson’s story is more than just inspiring; it’s a blueprint for success in the 21st century. It teaches our students that with passion, relentless hard work, and a solid foundation in STEM, no dream is too big—not even one that’s 140 million miles away.
