NEW DELHI: A total of 5950 cases relating to environment and forests issues were pending in various courts across the country as on 1.1.2009.
The Minister of State for Environment and Forests (independent charge) Jayanthi Natarajan gave this information in a written reply to a question by Shri S. S. Ramasubbu in Lok Sabha 19 December 2011.
National Green Tribunal has been established on 18.10.2010 for effective and expeditious disposal of cases relating to environmental protection and conservation of forests and other natural resources including enforcement of any legal right relating to environment and giving relief and compensation for damages to persons and property and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.
The government already set up ‘green benches’ across the country. These 5 places of sitting of the National Green Tribunal are at Delhi, Bhopal, Pune, Kolkata and Chennai.
