Mumbai – The government is focusing on skill development to leverage India’s huge demographic advantage, Kailash Aggarwal, joint secretary in the Ministry of Shipping said during his inspection visit to Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Kendra (PMKK) at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), in Mumbai.

While lauding the efforts of Allcargo Logistics Ltd in playing its part towards skilling the underprivileged youth in the logistics sector, Aggarwal said, “Skill development is the need of the hour to drive growth in the logistics sector.”.

The skilled workforce will be able to contribute to the economy in a sustainable way which, in turn, will facilitate economic growth of the country, he added.

Promotion of sustained and inclusive economic growth with productive and decent employment opportunities is one of the seventeen UN-identified sustainable goals, of which India is also a signatory.

Allcargo has been inviting senior industry professionals and officials to motivate the students through its skill development programmes to explore viable career options in the logistics sector, a company release said.

Aggarwal visit the facility to assess the classroom, reception, counselling room, placement cell, training laboratories, smart labs, pantry, kitchen and other facilities, the release said.

Allcargo will remain committed to making the logistics sector a skill-driven industry, Nilratan Shende, General Manager – CSR at Allcargo said. “We regularly organise visits by the industry dignitaries at our PMKK at JNPT to motivate the students to explore career opportunities in the sector. The PMKK is working towards enhancing the employability of the youth by providing them industry-specific training,” he added.

JNPT and City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) – a Government of India undertaking –  signed an MoU with Allcargo in November for skilling youth in logistics and allied sectors.

Allcargo’s multi-skill development center gives skill training in six logistics courses viz heavy vehicle driver, consignment booking assistant, consignment tracking executive, documentation assistant, inventory clerk and warehouse picker, the release said.

According to industry estimates, the total workforce in the logistics sector is expected to increase from 21 million to over 31 million by 2022. The sector will generate additional requirement of more than 9 million skilled workforce across all the modals-roads, railway, ports and aviation.
