SILIGURI: The newly elected Congress councillors have presented a letter to the mayor, requesting him to restart the ‘Plastic Free Siliguri‘ campaign and provide a separate office space for the Congress councillors at the SMC building in Court More. The councillors however had to wait for their turn to meet Bhattacharya as he became busy with an official meeting and other activities as soon as he reached the office.
Speaking to reporters later, Ward-16 councillor Sujay Ghatak said the Congress councillors met the newly elected Mayor and congratulated him on the victory. “We congratulated the SMC Mayor Ashok Bhattacharya on the victory and wished him all the success in running the municipality.
We have also submitted a letter requesting the mayor to restart the ‘Plastic Free Siliguri’ campaign as the previous one has become seemingly unsuccessful. We also requested the Mayor to provide a separate office space for Congress councillors so that they can contribute to proper functioning of the municipality” Ghatak informed.
Reacting to the request by the four Congress councillors, Bhattacharya said the municipality board will form a committee to restart the ‘Plastic Free Siliguri’ campaign on the eve of World Environment Day on June 5. “I will also urge the board members to include Ward-16 Councillor Sujay Ghatak in the committee” he added.
CPM sources said that a function will be organised at Siliguri Rajendra Prasad Girls High School ground in the evening to felicitate the SMC Mayor Ashok Bhattacharya and Chairman Dilip Sinha. (HS)
