NEW DELHI: ACC Madukkarai Cement Works has been conferred with the prestigious India CSR Community Initiative award for its CSR Project in Waste Management initiative on Monday, 6 April, 2015 at PHD House, New Delhi.
The award was in recognition of Madukkarai Cement Works CSR initiative –Solid Waste Management. The award was received by GC Shayamsundar on behalf of ACC Madukkarai Cement Works, for the Best CSR Project in Waste Management. Dr. Bhaskar Chatterjee, Director General (DG) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (IICA), Ministry of Corporate Affairs and Rusen Kumar, Managing Editor of IndiaCSR and CSR & COMPETITIVENESS conferred the awards to ACC Madukkarai.

The ACC Madukkarai Cement along with Madukkarai panchayat and an NGO launched ‘clean and green Madukkarai’. The project is implemented by women from the community self help group.
After implementation of this initiative the Madukkarai turned out cleaner community. The panchayat council is being continuously educated and created awareness about effective solid waste management program
The Clean & Green Madukkarai is unique project is a Public- Private Partnership model, where the corporate through its CSR initiatives has come together to with panchayat and NGO in strengthening and effective implementation of Solid Waste Management in community.
ACC Madukkarai Cement Works project is a Public- Private partnership model.
One of the biggest threats for the community is disposing of its garbage. The years of strong mind set and in-effective disposable of the garbage has lead to heaps of garbage around the community which gives huge filt of smell and pays way to innumerable diseases. The wastes are thrown in drainage lines, which gets choked and overflowed causing un-healthy living conditions. To implement a successful solid waste management it requires immense participation from the community, panchayat , government and corporate.
Clean & Green Madukkarai
The Clean & Green Madukkarai may aptly called as a people’s movement who have come together to seek solution for the effective garbage waste disposable. This project is being spearheaded by the Madukkarai Panchayat in association with the NGO and ACC.
The project main aim is to create awareness to community and implement effective garbage disposable mechanism. The program shall educate each and every house hold in segregation of waste , which are basically classified as organic waste and in organic waste .
The organic waste are collected every day by the Green friends (Garbage collectors) at the door step of the every household in the community and from there they would transport the organic waste to Bio – composting yard , where the waste are processed by vermin compost pits and converted into organic manure.
The project aim is to have Madukkarai Spl.Grade Panchayat declared as Garbage and Plastic free panchayat by 2016. The project does not only promote effective garbage management system, but also ensures the community has increased in its greenery development. Every year through this project we will be planting 3000 trees which will be nurtured by the community.
As a part of Clean & Green Madukkarai, ACC Madukkarai has associated with various schools and colleges in development of green belt and creating awareness in community.
The student volunteers from these colleges as part of their curriculum and community social drive have immensely in tree plantation drive in Madukkarai Panchayat. The students are taught importance of green environment and also provide exposure to Solid Waste Management initiatives of the Panchayat.
Regardless of the context, managing solid waste is going to be one of the biggest challenges of urban areas of all kind, from mega cities to the small town panchayats. It is almost always on the top five of the most challenging problems and yet it receives so less attention towards it.
The Panchayat effectively implementing and enforce the laws of the government regarding solid waste management ensuring restriction on usage of plastic waste will result in sustainability towards this “Clean & Green Madukkarai”
