Stakeholders can submit feedback on proposed revisions to the International Production Standard until 23 November 2026.
NEW DELHI (India CSR): ResponsibleSteel has opened a public consultation on proposed revisions to its International Production Standard, seeking feedback from stakeholders across the steel value chain. The proposed updates cover climate transition planning, emissions-accounting methodology, product claims, regulatory alignment, annual leave requirements and just transition considerations.
The consultation is open until 23 November 2026. ResponsibleSteel invited steel producers, downstream companies, material suppliers, technology providers, civil society organisations, and other interested stakeholders to review the proposals and share their views through the consultation process.
Scale And Assurance
The proposed revisions carry significance for a standard already used by more than 90 certified sites across five continents. These sites collectively represent over 146 million tonnes of annual steel production capacity.
ResponsibleSteel said the changes could influence how steelmakers demonstrate and independently verify environmental, social and governance performance amid evolving market expectations and regulatory requirements. The consultation therefore provides companies and stakeholders an opportunity to contribute practical insights on how the Standard should address sustainability performance across the sector.
Thirteen Core Principles
ResponsibleSteel’s International Production Standard sets requirements across 13 principles addressing major sustainability challenges in steel production. These include decarbonisation, labour rights, human rights, water stewardship and biodiversity.
The organisation reviews the Standard at least once every five years to maintain its relevance, credibility and effectiveness as industry practices, legislation and stakeholder expectations evolve. The current revision process also reflects the increasing importance of credible climate planning and consistent emissions measurement for companies operating across the steel value chain.
Stakeholder Engagement Process
The Standard is developed through a multi-stakeholder process involving steel producers, downstream businesses, civil society organisations and other stakeholders. In addition to the consultation survey, participants may request focused discussions with the ResponsibleSteel team to provide detailed feedback and understand the reasoning behind the proposed amendments.
Dr David McElroy, Head of Standards & Assurance at ResponsibleSteel, said the objective is to provide stakeholders a genuine opportunity “to better understand the proposed revisions” and help shape the future direction of the Production Standard.
Participation Until November
The consultation offers an important engagement window for organisations seeking to contribute to the future framework for responsible steel production. Stakeholders can review the proposed changes on the ResponsibleSteel consultation page and submit their feedback before the 23 November 2026 deadline.
