NEW DELHI (India CSR): Climate change is no longer a distant environmental concern. Extreme rainfall, floods, heatwaves, water stress and changing weather patterns are increasingly affecting communities, livelihoods, businesses and ecosystems.
The recent floods in Nepal are a reminder of the growing vulnerability of communities to extreme weather events. Floods can disrupt homes, infrastructure, agriculture, healthcare and livelihoods, with vulnerable communities often facing the greatest impact.
But the challenge goes beyond responding to disasters after they occur. Relief is critical in the immediate aftermath of a flood, cyclone, heatwave or drought, but it addresses the consequences rather than the underlying vulnerability. The larger opportunity for CSR is to support the transition from relief and recovery towards preparedness, adaptation and long-term resilience. The objective should be not only to help communities recover from the next climate shock, but to make them better prepared to withstand it in the first place.
For India, the warning is equally relevant. From urban flooding and heatwaves to drought, coastal risks and increasingly unpredictable rainfall, climate-related disruptions are already affecting communities and economic activity across regions. India’s climate vulnerability is also deeply localised. The risks faced by a coastal community may be very different from those faced by a drought-prone village, a Himalayan settlement or a densely populated urban neighbourhood. Therefore, climate-resilient CSR cannot follow a one-size-fits-all approach. It needs to begin with an understanding of local climate risks, community vulnerabilities, existing capacities and the likely impact on livelihoods, infrastructure and essential services. The Government of India itself has been focusing on flood management, early-warning systems and long-term flood mitigation, while Rs 2,117.85 crore was released from the SDRF for states affected by the 2026 monsoon floods.
The question is no longer whether companies should respond to climate disasters, but whether CSR should help communities become less vulnerable before disasters occur. The first step should be understanding risk. Before investing in a water structure, livelihood programme, school infrastructure or disaster-preparedness initiative, companies need to understand what climate risks a community faces, who is most vulnerable and what existing systems are already available to manage those risks. Climate-risk and vulnerability assessments can help CSR teams identify priority interventions and ensure that investments are aligned with actual community needs rather than being driven only by readily implementable projects.
How CSR Can Support Climate Preparedness
CSR can play an important role in helping communities prepare for climate-related challenges. Strategic CSR investments can move beyond short-term relief towards preparedness, resilience and long-term adaptation.The future of CSR must be about creating lasting resilience, helping communities become better prepared, better equipped and better positioned to face an uncertain climate future.”
Strengthening Water Security
Water conservation, rainwater harvesting, watershed development and groundwater recharge can help communities manage increasing water stress and extreme rainfall. Restoring ponds, wetlands and natural drainage systems can also contribute to local flood resilience. These interventions can deliver benefits beyond water availability. Restored water bodies, wetlands and natural drainage systems can act as important buffers during periods of intense rainfall while also improving water availability during dry periods. CSR programmes can therefore treat water resilience as a year-round community priority rather than managing flood control and water conservation as separate issues.
Building Climate-Resilient Livelihoods
Climate change directly affects agriculture and rural livelihoods. CSR programmes can support communities through climate-smart agriculture, improved irrigation, crop diversification, skills development and alternative livelihood opportunities. Climate-resilient livelihoods also need to extend beyond agriculture. Extreme weather can severely affect fisheries, livestock, small businesses, informal employment, construction, and other climate-sensitive occupations. CSR programmes can therefore support income diversification, skills development, access to technology, financial literacy and alternative livelihood opportunities that help households absorb and recover from climate-related disruptions.
Particular attention should also be given to groups that are disproportionately affected by climate shocks, including women, children, elderly people, persons with disabilities, small and marginal farmers, informal workers and economically vulnerable households. Building resilience means ensuring that those with the least capacity to absorb a shock are not left furthest behind.
Investing in Resilient Infrastructure
CSR investments can support safer roads, drainage systems, healthcare facilities, schools, solar lighting and other essential infrastructure. Such investments should increasingly consider local climate risks and future weather conditions. The focus should increasingly shift from simply creating infrastructure to creating climate-resilient infrastructure. Schools, healthcare centres, community facilities, roads and water systems should be designed or upgraded with local climate risks in mind. For example, infrastructure in heat-prone areas may require heat-mitigation measures, while flood-prone locations may require improved drainage, elevated structures or flood-resilient design.
Strengthening Disaster Preparedness
Community awareness, early-warning mechanisms, emergency preparedness training and local response capacity can reduce the impact of extreme weather events.Schools and community institutions can also play an important role in building awareness and preparedness among young people.
Building Resilient Urban Communities
Climate resilience is equally important in India’s rapidly growing cities. Urban flooding, extreme heat, water stress and inadequate drainage can disproportionately affect low-income and informal settlements. CSR can support initiatives such as heat-risk awareness, community cooling spaces, rainwater harvesting, restoration of urban water bodies, green spaces, improved drainage, climate-resilient schools and healthcare facilities, and community-level emergency preparedness.
Protecting Natural Ecosystems
Healthy ecosystems provide natural protection against climate risks. Forests, wetlands, ponds and other natural systems can help regulate water, reduce erosion and support biodiversity.
CSR programmes can therefore integrate biodiversity conservation, ecosystem restoration and water management into broader climate strategies. This also highlights the importance of nature-based solutions in climate resilience. Restoring ecosystems can provide multiple benefits simultaneously — reducing flood risk, improving groundwater recharge, controlling erosion, supporting biodiversity and strengthening local livelihoods. CSR investments in ecosystem restoration should therefore be viewed not only as environmental initiatives but also as investments in community resilience.
From Relief to Resilience
Emergency relief remains essential when disasters occur. However, long-term resilience requires addressing the vulnerabilities that make communities susceptible to climate shocks.Climate action cannot stop at reducing emissions. We must also strengthen the resilience of communities that are increasingly exposed to climate-related risks.CSRcan become a powerful instrument for climate resilience when investments are rooted in local needs, informed by evidence, and designed for long-term community outcomes.
This means companies can move beyond responding after a disaster and invest proactively in risk assessment, preparedness, resilient infrastructure, livelihoods and community capacity building.
Measuring Climate Impact
Climate-focused CSR should also be measurable. Impact assessment can help organisations understand whether interventions are improving resilience and creating meaningful outcomes. However, measuring resilience requires going beyond counting activities and beneficiaries. The more important question is whether the intervention has reduced vulnerability or increased the community’s capacity to cope with climate-related shocks. For example, a water programme could measure improvements in groundwater availability or the number of months of water security; a livelihood programme could assess income diversification and the adoption of climate-resilient practices; and a disaster-preparedness programme could measure the proportion of households receiving early warnings or having emergency preparedness plans.

- Household well-being
Evidence can help organisations improve programmes and direct CSR investments towards areas of greater need and impact.
