Farmer-first Sugarcane Development Programme provides scientific advisory, quality seed support, mechanisation and sustainable farming guidance across nearly 21,000 acres.
NEW DELHI (India CSR®): The Adie Broswon Group is strengthening scientific and sustainable sugarcane cultivation in Punjab through its Sugarcane Development Programme, which has reached more than 1,500 farmers across 94 villages, 13 cane societies and nearly 21,000 acres of farmland. The programme combines agricultural science, continuous field-level advisory and modern cultivation practices to help farmers improve productivity, crop quality, resource efficiency and long-term farm profitability. The Group plans to expand the programme’s reach to 25,000 acres in the coming months, with a long-term ambition to cover 35,000 acres and support sugarcane productivity of over 600 quintals per acre.
Building a Stronger Sugarcane Ecosystem
The initiative is designed as a long-term farmer-development movement rather than a one-time agricultural extension exercise. Its central objective is to bring practical scientific knowledge and modern agronomy closer to sugarcane growers while building a stronger and more resilient farm-to-factory ecosystem. Through sustained engagement, the programme seeks to support higher yields, better cultivation efficiency and stronger farmer incomes. It also aims to create demonstration effects in rural communities, where farmers who successfully adopt improved methods can encourage neighbouring growers to follow similar practices.
Kisan Goshti Promotes Practical Knowledge Sharing
As part of the programme, the Adie Broswon Group recently organised a Farmers’ Awareness Meeting, or Kisan Goshti, at Harchowal. The meeting brought together farmers, agricultural scientists, sugarcane experts and government representatives to discuss practical ways of improving crop productivity, resource-use efficiency and farm profitability. The sessions focused on field-ready interventions that farmers can adopt according to local soil, water and crop conditions. Key areas discussed included Monsoon and Autumn planting, Trench Planting, Space Planting, intercropping, disease-free seed selection, soil health management, balanced nutrient application, weed and disease control, mechanisation and sustainable cultivation practices. The emphasis was on converting agricultural research into simple and actionable guidance for farmers.
Year-Round Support for Farmers
The Sugarcane Development Programme extends beyond awareness sessions. Participating farmers receive year-round field advisory, soil-testing support, access to quality seed cane, mechanisation assistance and digital tools. They are also supported by experienced agronomists, researchers and agricultural scientists. This regular interaction is expected to help farmers make informed decisions throughout the crop cycle, from planting and nutrient management to disease control and harvesting. The approach is designed to improve confidence in scientific farming methods and enable growers to adopt proven practices gradually and effectively. As the programme is currently in its first season of implementation, the Group expects its impact to become more measurable as farmer adoption expands. The anticipated outcomes include improved yields, higher crop quality, more efficient use of agricultural inputs and stronger incomes for sugarcane-growing households.
Sustainable Farming and Future Carbon Opportunities
The programme also promotes a wider vision of sustainable agriculture in Punjab. Farmers are being encouraged to adopt practices that improve soil health and enhance the efficient use of water, nutrients and other farm resources. The initiative is also creating awareness around sugarcane’s potential contribution to carbon sequestration and the possible opportunities that may develop through government-supported carbon-credit mechanisms and other sustainability-linked interventions. By linking productivity with sustainability, the programme aims to help farmers prepare for an agricultural future where environmental performance, resource efficiency and economic resilience become increasingly important.
Creating Local Farmer Champions
Capacity building is being carried out among both farmers and the Group’s cane development teams. The objective is to strengthen the ability of field teams to provide consistent, science-based and timely support at the village level. Progressive farmers who have adopted improved practices, including Space Planting, are being recognised and encouraged to become local champions. Their on-ground experience can help demonstrate the practical value of scientific cultivation and motivate wider adoption in surrounding villages. The model encourages peer learning, allowing farmers to learn not only from experts but also from the visible results achieved by fellow growers.

As the programme expands, the Adie Broswon Group aims to create one of Punjab’s more comprehensive farmer-development movements in the sugarcane sector. The initiative brings together scientific research, modern farming practices, field-level support and long-term farmer partnerships.
