NEW DELHI (India CSR):  John Crane is a global leader in flow control technologies and an innovator in solutions for rotating equipment, and a business of Smiths Group plc. The company has completed a Quantitative Optical Gas Imaging (QOGI) survey for a leading food-industry producer, enabling clear opportunities to reduce fugitive emissions, strengthen reliability and improve operational efficiency when corrective maintenance actions are implemented.

The survey focused on a critical extractor used in vegetable oil production. Using advanced Optical Gas Imaging technology, John Crane engineers identified 22 potential leak points across a range of fittings, seals, inspection points and flanges. Nine of these leaks were quantified at a combined rate of approximately 16 kg/hr, providing the customer with clear, data-driven insight to prioritise maintenance and repair activities.

Based on the customer’s reference value for hydrocarbon solvent use, the quantified leaks represented an estimated annual material loss in excess of $194,000 USD if left unaddressed. Conducted at a fraction of the potential material savings, the survey demonstrated a strong return on investment and highlighted the value of early detection and targeted maintenance.

The customer response to the programme has been highly positive. Following the initial survey, additional QOGI inspections have already been completed at a second facility operating similar equipment. Repeat surveys at both sites are scheduled for early 2026 to validate maintenance effectiveness and support sustained performance improvements. The success of the approach has also generated interest from colleagues in other regions, who are now exploring similar initiatives within their own operations.

By visualising and quantifying emissions that are difficult to detect through traditional methods, QOGI enables food-industry operators to protect process efficiency, support environmental objectives and enhance employee safety. QOGI is delivered as part of John Crane Performance Plus™ modular service framework, within the Asset Condition Management category, helping customers make informed, data-led maintenance decisions.

“This project demonstrates how advanced diagnostics can support more reliable and sustainable food production processes,” said Philippe Lambert, VP Commercial and Service for John Crane. “QOGI provides customers with clear visibility of loss mechanisms, allowing them to target repairs effectively and validate the impact of maintenance over time.”

The success of this survey underscores the growing relevance of QOGI within the food industry, where hydrocarbons and solvents play a critical role in production processes. When integrated into a structured Managed Reliability approach, routine QOGI monitoring supports improved maintenance planning, operational resilience and reduced risk.
