CHANDIGARH: CII-Chandigarh in association with Hotel Park in, Sector 35, Chandigarh will celebrate the World environment Day by organizing Lunch for the orphans, destitute and abandoned children at Bal Niketan – A “Home” for Orphan, Panchkula. There would be around 25-30 children living in orphanage to whom CII will to offer lunch on 5June 2013 at 1-2 pm.
The theme for this year’s World Environment Day is Think.Eat.Save, an anti-food waste campaign that encourages all hotels to reduce their ‘foodprint’. The initiative endeavours to raise awareness of the environmental impact.
According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), every year 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted. 1 in every 7 people in the world go to bed hungry and more than 20,000 children die from hunger.
Food waste typically represents around 40% of total catering waste. Waste is ground down into fine pieces which are then washed into the mains drainage system thereby avoiding its costly and environmentally unfriendly collection and treatment as solid waste.
Many regional campaigns have recently been launched, echoing to the challenge of food waste at the national level and in major sectors, including hotels, restaurants, supermarkets and households. Perhaps surprisingly, one-third of all unused food in developed countries is being wasted.
“In this context, as a part of our CSR mandate, would like to celebrate the World Environment Day on 5th June . We propose to take initiative through which we request you to kindly donate the unconsumed or excess prepared food items to the needy beneficiaries of one of the orphanage i.e. Bal Niketan, Sector 2, Panchkula, so that the wastage of food can be prevented subsequently to which the need of the poor people would be sufficed.” Monde Patricia, Confederation of Indian Industry, Northern Region informed IndiaCSR.
