UDAIPUR (India CSR): Hindustan Zinc Limited, India’s only and the world’s largest integrated zinc producer, announced a 44% year-on-year growth in LGBTQIA+ employees across operations. The company has also launched its Pride Month campaign titled #CallHZLYourHom,e reaffirming its commitment to fostering an inclusive, diverse, and safe workplace. The campaign highlights the company’s proactive strides toward gender and identity equity.

Inclusive Policy Highlights

The company has pioneered LGBTQIA+ inclusion with industry leading workplace policies such as providing financial support of up to INR 1 lakh for transgender employees, INR 2 lakhs for gender reaffirmation with leaves and compensation policy for employees considering gender reassignment surgery, parenthood policy for LGBTQIA+ individuals legally adopting child, and housing policy for employees from the LGBTQIA community.

Breaking Industry Norms

In a traditionally male-dominated metals and mining sector, Hindustan Zinc employs twenty-three transgender employees across its business units, offering significant representation in mainstream roles like finance, supply chain, marketing, medical, and other departments. This has been possible due to the company’s commitment to providing rich job content powered by a tech-first approach through Industry 4.0, robotics and automation that have standardized work processes and eliminated manual intervention associated with this sector. The company provides differentiated career enhancement opportunities in this high-growth sector with the global boom in critical minerals and energy transition metals.

Leadership’s Strong Message

Sharing her thoughts, Priya Agarwal Hebbar, Non-Executive Director – Vedanta Ltd & Chairperson – Hindustan Zinc Ltd, said, “For many individuals in the LGBTQIA+ community, the outside world and sometimes even their own homes can feel like a stage where they are constantly watched, judged, and misunderstood. At Hindustan Zinc, however, we strive to create an environment where every person is valued and empowered to be their authentic selves. Here, you are not just an employee; you are part of a family, a place you can truly call home. Hindustan Zinc is proud to lead with the highest rate of gender equality in the metals and manufacturing industry. We take pride in making our people find home at work.”

Employee Experience Speaks

Speaking on the occasion, Kaushal Singh, a LGBTQIA+ employees working as a Civil Infrastructure manager at Rampura Agucha, home to the world’s largest underground zinc mining operations, said, ““I was initially apprehensive about being accepted, but the culture here is truly inclusive. From gender-sensitive policies to mental wellness sessions and unbiased hiring practices, I’ve consistently felt seen, respected, and empowered. My colleagues recognize me as an equal contributor, and this is a place where both my identity and expertise are genuinely valued.Hindustan Zinc’s support has not only helped me thrive but also enabled me advocate for others. It has been a truly transformative journey.”

I’m entrusted with key responsibilities and mentored like any other professional, with a focus on my growth. The inclusive environment and thoughtful policies make me feel safe, motivated, and committed to building a long-term career here. It’s a workplace where dignity and opportunity go hand in hand.”

Zinclusion Platform Drives

Hindustan Zinc has created an in-house organization wide platform called ‘Zinclusion’ that strives to embrace diversity in all forms, including the LGBTQIA+, differently abled individuals, and people from different geographies and ethnicities. The platform’s goal is to create a safe and welcoming workplace for all employees to be themselves and ensure equal opportunities for advancement regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. Through regular sensitization sessions, leadership advocacy, and community engagement, the company is actively nurturing a workplace rooted in empathy and awareness, ensuring that every voice is heard, every identity respected, and every individual is empowered. The campaign reflects Hindustan Zinc’sbroader commitment to a people-first culture.

Roadmap to 2030

Since 2022, the company has been expanding its recruitment efforts to actively include members of the transgender community, who face challenges in securing sustainable livelihoods for a life of dignity. With this initiative, the company aims to create a paradigm shift towards acceptance and inclusivity in the manufacturing industry, for multi-dimensional thinking and well-rounded decision-making. Hindustan Zinc aims to achieve 30% diversity in the workforce by 2030 as per its Sustainable Development Goals and currently has a gender diversity ratio of nearly 26% in the executive workforce, amongst the highest in the world in the metals & mining sector.
