A Robust Commitment to Social Good

Cipla’s consolidated CSR expenditure for the financial year 2024-25 amounted to Rs 84.18 crores, with additional social spends by the company and its subsidiaries totaling Rs 8.54 crores. The required CSR obligation for the Group during the year was Rs 84.65 crores. This translates to a total expenditure that not only met but slightly exceeded the mandated requirement, demonstrating Cipla’s proactive approach to social impact. A total of Rs 80.07 crores was spent for the financial year, with Rs 79.66 crores specifically allocated to CSR projects. Notably, there were no administrative overheads associated with these expenditures, ensuring maximum impact for the allocated funds. Additionally, Rs 41.30 lakhs was spent on impact assessment studies.

The company reported an unspent CSR amount of Rs 4.75 crores related to ongoing projects, which has been duly transferred to a designated “Unspent Corporate Social Responsibility” account. This meticulous financial management underscores Cipla’s adherence to regulatory requirements and its commitment to ensuring all allocated funds translate into tangible benefits for society.

The ‘Caring for Life’ Ethos in Action

At the core of Cipla’s CSR philosophy is its enduring purpose: ‘Caring for Life’. This isn’t merely a slogan but a guiding principle that informs the company’s initiatives, striving to create a healthier world and enrich the lives of all stakeholders. The philanthropic arm, Cipla Foundation, serves as the principal implementation agency, collaborating with credible institutions and NGOs like HelpAge India, Tata Memorial Centre, and BAIF to extend its reach across various geographies, including Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Goa, and Sikkim.

Advancing Healthcare Access

A significant portion of Cipla’s CSR efforts in FY 2024-25 focused on enhancing community health, with a particular emphasis on palliative care and strengthening primary healthcare systems. The company supported the integration of an additional palliative care unit into one of Mumbai’s largest government hospitals, Nair Hospital. Furthermore, it bolstered comprehensive cancer care in North India by launching palliative care services at the Tata Memorial Centre in Punjab and the Regional Cancer Centre in Rajasthan. Maharashtra also saw the launch of its largest palliative home care initiative in Pune, providing holistic care to seriously ill patients.

Beyond India, Cipla Foundation in South Africa continued its impactful healthcare initiatives. The Dablapmeds (CCMDD) programme supported over 2.72 lakh registered patients, delivering nearly 4.48 lakh medicine parcels through 43 pickup points and creating over 130 jobs in FY 2024-25. The “Miles for Smiles” partnership with Operation Smile funded more than 63 cleft surgeries, transforming lives and fostering hope.

Environmental Stewardship

Cipla’s commitment to ‘Caring for Life’ extends to the planet, with significant strides in environmental sustainability. In FY 2024-25, the company achieved a major milestone by becoming water positive across its India manufacturing operations, replenishing more water than consumed, well ahead of its target timeline. This remarkable achievement included conserving 24.7 lakh cubic metres of water across Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, and recycling 51% of its total water withdrawal.

The company also made substantial progress in reducing its carbon footprint, achieving a 58% reduction in Scope 1 (energy-based) and Scope 2 emissions compared to the FY 2019-20 baseline, with 64% of its electricity sourced from renewables. A 100 MWp solar partnership generated 95,005 iRECs, contributing to a greener energy profile. Impressively, all 37 of Cipla’s manufacturing units and its R&D Centre in India are now certified as “Zero Waste to Landfill”. These efforts earned Cipla a ranking of 3rd globally in the Drug & Pharmaceuticals sector by S&P Global CSA, with an ESG score of 79, and inclusion in the Dow Jones Sustainability World and Emerging Markets Index.

Cipla’s responsible waste management practices further contributed to environmental conservation. In FY 2024-25, total waste directed to disposal from global operations decreased by 19% to 3,267 MT. The recycling and co-processing of plastic collected resulted in the saving of 2,34,219 MWh of energy, 2,68,354 KL of water, and avoided 28,847 tCO2e emissions.

Empowering Communities and Education

Beyond health and environment, Cipla’s CSR initiatives focused on empowering communities through education, skilling, and disaster response. The company participated in the Government of India’s PM Internship Scheme, offering industry-relevant training to young talent. In a unique educational initiative, an “AI on Wheels” van was introduced in Sikkim to deliver AI-based technical skills to students in remote areas.

The spirit of volunteerism thrives within Cipla, with over 15,000 employees dedicating more than 1,00,000 hours across 150+ cities. Their efforts supported causes ranging from palliative cancer care and blood donation for thalassemia patients to mentoring children. Cipla also extended flood relief efforts in Bihar and Tamil Nadu, providing hygiene kits, dry rations, and essential relief materials to 1,939 affected families. This commitment to community development also saw the creation or acquisition of 158 capital assets through CSR spending in the year.

Governance and Transparency

Cipla’s CSR initiatives are underpinned by a robust governance framework. The company voluntarily published an Integrated Annual Report for FY 2024-25, encompassing both financial and non-financial information, aligned with the International Integrated Reporting Framework. M/s DNV Business Assurance India Private Limited provided independent assurance on the non-financial disclosures, including BRSR Core indicators, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of reported data. The Board of Directors, through its CSR Committee, oversees these initiatives, ensuring compliance with Section 135 of the Companies Act, 2013, and the company’s CSR policy.

A Legacy of Lasting Impact

Cipla’s substantial Rs 84.67 crore CSR investment in FY 2025 is a testament to its unwavering commitment to its founding purpose. From pioneering affordable medicines globally to championing environmental sustainability and empowering vulnerable communities, Cipla continues to demonstrate that business success and social responsibility are not mutually exclusive but deeply intertwined. The company’s integrated approach to value creation, prioritizing patient needs, environmental health, and community well-being, sets a benchmark for corporate citizenship, ensuring a healthier and more sustainable future for all. As Cipla marks its 90th anniversary, its legacy of ‘Caring for Life’ continues to inspire, promising sustained efforts to make a tangible difference in the world, one life at a time.
