NEW DELHI (India CSR): Tata Elxsi Limited, known for its design and technology services, has detailed its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) spending and initiatives for the financial year ended March 31, 2025. Demonstrating a commitment to inclusive growth and equitable development, the company’s efforts spanned key areas like education, healthcare, and environmental sustainability, reflecting its philosophy that purposeful design extends beyond products to impact society. While the company met the majority of its spending obligation, a portion has been set aside for ongoing multi-year projects.

Overall CSR Performance in FY 2025

For the financial year 2024-25, Tata Elxsi’s CSR obligation, calculated as two percent of the average net profit as per Section 135 of the Companies Act, 2013, amounted to Rs 15.32 crores. The company’s total expenditure on CSR initiatives during the year reached Rs 13.50 crores. This total comprises Rs 12.83 crores spent directly on CSR projects and Rs 67.17 lakhs on administrative overheads.

Consequently, there was an unspent CSR amount of Rs 1.83 crores at the end of the financial year. The company has clarified that this unspent amount is due to its commitment to multi-year projects approved by the CSR Committee. This sum has been transferred to a dedicated unspent CSR account in accordance with the Companies Act, 2013.

The unspent amount is earmarked for specific ongoing projects with implementing partners:

  • Deshpande Educational Trust: Rs 20 lakhs
  • Sustain Plus Energy Foundation: Rs 52.65 lakhs
  • Eco-Watch: Rs 4 lakhs
  • Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Educational and Cultural Centre: Rs 72.05 lakhs
  • Ramana Maharshi Centre for Learning: Rs 21.70 lakhs
  • Royal Commonwealth Society for the Blind: Rs 10.07 lakhs
  • Wildlife Research and Conservation Society: Rs 1.52 lakhs
  • Kanal Innovation Charitable Trusts: Rs 70.69 thousand

The company has stated that the amount set aside will be spent according to MCA guidelines and the terms of the contracts with the implementing partners.

Key Focus Areas: Shiksha, Niramay, and Paryavaran

Tata Elxsi’s CSR initiatives are structured around three thematic pillars: Shiksha (Education), Niramay (Healthcare), and Paryavaran (Environment & Sustainability). These areas are designed to serve societal, local, and national goals in the locations where the company operates. The approach is fundamentally geared towards nurturing inclusivity, driving socio-economic progression, and delivering a lasting, positive impact within communities.

1. Shiksha (Education): Recognizing education as a fundamental right and a driver of advancement, Tata Elxsi’s education initiatives are designed to eliminate barriers for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. While specific spending outcomes for FY 2024-25 in terms of student numbers were not detailed for projects, the report highlights support for over 7,200 students in their educational journeys in FY 2023-24. Employee volunteering in FY 2024-25 included over 10,000 hours spent on foundational literacy and numeracy coaching and over 24,000 hours on mock interviews and 20,000 hours on mentorship for youth, directly benefiting over 7,500 students across age groups.

2. Niramay (Healthcare): In healthcare, Tata Elxsi aims to transform patient care and clinical outcomes. Initiatives like Project DISHA provide free and subsidized medical care in densely populated areas like DJ Halli in Bengaluru. Highlights from FY 2023-24 included over 33,500 consultations and procedures and support for blood donation drives resulting in 1,500 units donated. The company also contributed to establishing village dispensaries and training health workers. A significant ongoing commitment mentioned is a Rs 2 crores sponsorship over FY 2026-FY 2028 towards co-developing a Level III Trauma Centre in Wayanad, Kerala, following landslides and floods in 2024, part of a larger Rs 7 crores project with other partners.

3. Paryavaran (Environment & Sustainability): Tata Elxsi is dedicated to respecting, protecting, and restoring the environment. Initiatives include afforestation, water conservation, and waste management. Projects like the one with 14 Trees aim to reverse ecological degradation by planting native species. In FY 2023-24, this involved nurturing 200+ native species and expanding to plant 697 additional trees, while also generating employment for over 150 local villagers. Other environmental actions in FY 2023-24 included restoring lakes, creating water bodies, and recycling plastic and e-waste through clean-up drives. Employee volunteering played a significant role with over 40,000 hours invested in activities like afforestation, lake clean-ups, and coastal cleaning in FY 2024-25.

Employee Engagement and Governance

Employee involvement is a key component of Tata Elxsi’s CSR strategy, amplified through employee volunteering programs. In FY 2024-25, employees contributed significantly, with a total of 1,19,026 hours of employee volunteering recorded.

The company’s CSR approach is anchored by a comprehensive governance framework. A Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Committee, comprising Board Members including independent directors, is responsible for formulating and monitoring the CSR initiatives. The Board adopts the CSR Policy based on the committee’s recommendations. The company’s Annual Report includes a detailed report on CSR initiatives and expenditure.
