NEW DELHI (India CSR): Aligning with the theme of International Biodiversity Day 2025 ‘Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development’, Godrej Enterprises Group reaffirms its commitment of following nature-first business practices. With a legacy that spans over 127 years, Godrej has made landmark contributions to nature conservation, most notably the preservation of the Pirojshanagar mangroves, India’s first ISO 14001-certified mangrove forest, and a living example of urban ecosystem protection.
As custodians of the largest privately managed mangrove reserve in India spread over thousands of acres in Vikhroli (Mumbai), GEG has protected this vital ecosystem for decades. These mangroves sequester and hold an estimated over 12,00,000 tons of sequestered carbon dioxide equivalents with annually capturing over 60,000 tons and support more than 1,500 species of flora and fauna, becoming Mumbai’s ‘green lungs’.

The company has also launched an ambitious new study aimed at enhancing mangrove conservation efforts urban landscapes in India. As part of the Mangrove Coalition – an alliance with the Soonabai Pirojsha Godrej Foundation, WRI India, WWF India, Stanford University and Conservation International – the initiative will focus Land use and governance, Stakeholder engagement and capacity building on developing community-led conservation models, raising public awareness, and carrying out Ecological studies for Integrated valuation of ecosystem services and tradeoff along with creating a Mangrove Health Index (MHI) toolkit to assess the vitality of these critical ecosystems.
This commitment is reflected not only in Godrej’s large-scale conservation partnerships but also in everyday practices and on-ground stewardship led by its dedicated teams.
The Horticulture Management Services (HMS) team at GEG is at the heart of enhancing biodiversity across the Godrej’s campuses. Their work spans increasing green cover and developing sustainable landscapes. The Wetlands Management Services (WMS) team undertakes extensive community awareness programs along with facilitating wildlife rescue and rehabilitation from urban spaces in the township, and the Environmental Engineering Services (EES) team implements and manages resource and water conservation initiatives along with ensuring a zero waste to landfill township.
At the Pirojshanagar campus, the team employs remote sensing and GPS technologies to map vegetation and estimate carbon sequestration, while actively enhancing the Biodiversity Index by introducing new and indigenous plant species to the existing 1,100+ species.
At Khalapur, a six-hectare plantation with over 6,000 trees, developed using high-density plantation techniques, has flourished over the last three years with active support from the local community towards its maintenance. The Godrej Appliances plant in Shirwal, home to over 15,000 trees including sandalwood, showcases how industry and nature can coexist harmoniously. The facility uses drip irrigation and hydroponic systems to conserve water and features an open-air butterfly park. The Naoroji Godrej Centre for Plant Research, Recognized by Department of Scientific & Industrial Research (DSIR SIRO) renowned for Plant Conservation, Plant Taxonomy and Phytochemistry, since 1992 is engaged in carrying out research in plant diversity and conservation of Threatened endemic species of the Western Ghats. Over the last 5 years NGCPR has conserved more than 1200 plants and over 250 endemic plant species. Its herbarium constitutes about 5000 plant specimens, a collection from across India. Since inception have discovered 9 plant species
