NEW DELHI (India CSR): As part of a broader push for sustainable urban development, Petronet LNG Limited, under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) commitments, has announced a partnership with the Delhi government to fund the development of two public parks in Kalkaji, South Delhi. The project, with an allocated budget of Rs 1 crore, was announced by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday, marking a new chapter in citizen-focused infrastructure development.

In an increasingly concrete-dominated urban landscape, this move is aimed at reclaiming open spaces, improving environmental health, and enhancing the quality of life for local communities.

Petronet LNG’s Commitment to Green Urban Spaces

Petronet LNG’s CSR program has long emphasized sustainability, environment, and community welfare. This latest initiative in Kalkaji highlights how the company is using CSR not just to fund programs, but to create visible, long-term change in urban India.

With rising concerns around pollution, mental health, and lack of public spaces, the creation of these two parks is expected to offer:

  • Fresh air and improved air quality
  • Safe and accessible spaces for families and children
  • Opportunities for physical activity and social interaction
  • Improved biodiversity and green aesthetics

“CSR is not about ticking boxes. It’s about making lives better. And what better way than providing people with green lungs in the middle of the city?” said a spokesperson from Petronet LNG.

CM Rekha Gupta: ‘Parks Are the Lungs of the City’

At the official launch of the project, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta described the parks as critical to Delhi’s future.

“These parks are not just spaces with grass and trees. They are lungs for the city,” she said. “Green spaces are essential for physical and mental well-being, and we are committed to making them accessible to all.”

She also emphasized the role of corporate partnerships in realizing the vision of a cleaner, greener Delhi, and called on more companies to step forward in supporting local communities through their CSR channels.

Designed for All: Recreation, Community, and Wellness

The proposed parks will be multi-functional green areas, designed to cater to all age groups and demographics. According to preliminary plans, the parks will feature:

  • Walking and jogging tracks
  • Children’s play areas
  • Open gym equipment
  • Shaded benches and community gathering zones
  • Native plant species for improved ecological balance

The location in Kalkaji, which includes densely populated residential areas and informal settlements, was chosen for its high need for open, accessible public spaces.

CSR as a Catalyst for Urban Development

This project showcases how CSR investments can be used strategically for community development and environmental sustainability. Instead of limiting CSR to financial donations, Petronet LNG is directly engaging with the civic ecosystem to improve public infrastructure and environmental resilience.

It also aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:

  • SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being
  • SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
  • SDG 13: Climate Action
  • SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals

A Replicable Model for Public-Private Partnerships

The Kalkaji parks project is emerging as a model case for CSR-public sector synergy. With Petronet LNG providing the funding and the Delhi government overseeing implementation, the collaboration demonstrates how shared responsibility can accelerate development outcomes.

Officials noted that once the parks are completed, local Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) may be engaged to support their upkeep, encouraging community ownership of the infrastructure.

Petronet LNG’s CSR-driven urban park project in Kalkaji is not just a symbolic gesture—it’s a practical solution to Delhi’s rising urban stress. It brings much-needed green relief, reclaims public space, and fosters healthier lifestyles for thousands of residents.

As Chief Minister Rekha Gupta aptly stated, “Clean, green and inclusive public spaces are the foundation of a thriving city.” With CSR backing from responsible companies like Petronet LNG, that vision is steadily becoming a reality.
