NEW DELHI (India CSR): GD Goenka Group is delighted to announce the launch of the ‘Gayatri Devi Goenka Award for Women of Substance,’ a prestigious recognition for women who redefine strength and make an impact. Chhaya Sharma, a distinguished IPS officer, known for her significant contributions to law enforcement and commitment to justice, became the first recipient of the award.

Honored for Excellence

“I am honoured to receive the Gayatri Devi Goenka Award for Women of Substance. It is not just a personal accomplishment but a testament to the collaborative efforts and support of my colleagues and mentors. Today, women have the support of a robust legal framework, and this award reflects the progress we have made in breaking barriers and overcoming challenges,” said Sharma.

Celebrating Women Leaders

A distinguished team of women leaders from the GD Goenka Group came together in a powerful moment of stewardship and celebration, honoring Chhaya Sharma. The event was graced by Renu Goenka, Vice Chairperson; Dr. Amrita Bahl, Chief Education Officer; Dr. Neeta Pant, CHRO; Dr. Manvi Arora, Chief Compliance Officer; and Dr. Kim Menezes, Vice Chancellor of GD Goenka University—leaders championing progress and transformation with vision and purpose.

Recognizing Remarkable Contributions

“The ‘Gayatri Devi Goenka Award for Women of Substance’ is a distinctive initiative to celebrate women who leave a lasting mark on society. Sharma is an inspiration to countless individuals with her exceptional service to the nation and we are elated to honour her remarkable contributions with this esteemed award,’’ said Renu Goenka.

A Distinguished Career

Sharma is currently serving as the Special Commissioner of Police (Training) and SPUWAC in Delhi Police and  has played a phenomenal role in some of India’s most high-profile criminal investigations.

Championing Justice

She also led the 2012 Nirbhaya case, ensuring swift arrests and the filing of a charge sheet within a record 18 days. Her relentless pursuit of justice extends to dismantling organised crime networks and advocating for human rights reforms. Beyond her enforcement role, she has trained over 90,000 personnel in India’s new criminal laws, shaping a more accountable and efficient policing framework.

Commitment to Empowerment

”This award reflects our commitment to empower women, encouraging them to pursue their passions and create meaningful change in the world. Ms. Chhaya Sharma’s contributions towards ensuring a safer and more inclusive society are unparalleled, and we will continue to support and celebrate those who strive to make a difference,” said Dr. Kim Menezes, Vice Chancellor of GD Goenka University.

Inspiring Conversations

The occasion also featured an insightful fireside chat featuring Sharma and Dr. Amrita Bahl, Chief Education Officer of the GD Goenka Group. The conversation delved into her experiences, challenges, and vision for the future of law enforcement in the country.

Honoring Women Leaders

“The ‘Gayatri Devi Goenka Award for Women of Substance’ honors women who push boundaries, shape new narratives, and lead with purpose. Ms. Chhaya Sharma’s journey reflects resilience, conviction, and an unwavering commitment to justice. This award is a reminder that every woman carries within her the power to shape the world. May it inspire action, strengthen resolve, and open new possibilities for those who dare to lead.’’ said Dr. Amrita Bahl.

Strengthening a Legacy

With this award, the GD Goenka Group has strengthened its legacy of empowering and celebrating women who drive change and foster a meaningful difference in society.
