CHENNAI (India CSR): In a significant step towards educational inclusivity, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has partnered with Herbalife India to offer 1,000 scholarships in Data Science. The scholarships are aimed at economically disadvantaged students, helping them access the foundational level of the IITM BS Degree in Data Science and Applications. This collaboration aligns with IIT Madras’s vision of “IIT Madras for All,” an initiative dedicated to making high-quality education accessible to students across India, irrespective of their economic background.

Bridging Educational Gaps with CSR Support

The scholarship initiative, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between IIT Madras and Herbalife India, highlights the role of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in expanding educational opportunities. The signing ceremony was attended by prominent figures, including Shri Uday Prakash, VP – Strategy and Implementation at Herbalife India, and Prof. Ashwin Mahalingam, Dean of Alumni and Corporate Relations at IIT Madras. The initiative not only seeks to support underprivileged students but also underscores the importance of gender equality in education by reserving 50% of the scholarships for female students.

Aiming for Gender Parity in STEM Fields

The “Merit-cum-Means Scholarship for the IITM BS Degree in Data Science and Applications” has a strong focus on empowering female students, addressing the gender gap in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields. By reserving half of the scholarships for women, IIT Madras and Herbalife aim to foster an inclusive academic environment, encouraging more women to pursue careers in technology and data science—a sector crucial to India’s economic growth and innovation landscape.

“Education is a cornerstone of economic development and inclusivity in our country. Our collaboration with IIT Madras aims to equip economically disadvantaged students with essential skills and opportunities,” said Uday Prakash, VP of Strategy and Implementation at Herbalife India. “This initiative empowers them to compete globally and also promotes a diverse workforce by supporting female participation in technology.”

Empowering Students Through Flexible Education Paths

The scholarship program offers flexibility, allowing students to pursue diplomas or full degrees in Data Science and Programming. This adaptable structure is particularly beneficial for those needing to balance academic goals with financial or personal constraints. Additionally, the program aims to boost employability, economic mobility, and personal development by equipping students with in-demand skills in data science—a field experiencing rapid growth in India.

Prof. Ashwin Mahalingam expressed gratitude for Herbalife’s CSR involvement, emphasizing the power of corporate partnerships in expanding educational reach. “Our engagement with corporates like Herbalife enables us to provide scholarships, support research, and extend our educational impact. Collaborations beyond our walls are crucial to reaching more students and creating real change,” he said.

Data Science Education: A Booming Market in India

India’s data science education market is projected to grow from $299.75 million in 2023 to $2.04 billion by 2028, with an impressive CAGR of 46.77%, according to an Indian edtech report. By providing these scholarships, Herbalife India and IIT Madras are positioning students from underserved backgrounds to capitalize on this growing field, creating pathways for better economic opportunities for themselves and their families.

Career-Focused Mentorship and Practical Training

The scholarship recipients will gain more than just financial aid—they will also benefit from career-focused mentorship and hands-on industry experience through internships. These components are integral to the program’s design, helping students develop the practical skills required for high-demand jobs in data science and related sectors. This mentorship model supports students in building confidence and readiness for the workforce, bridging the gap between academic learning and professional requirements.

A Model for Inclusive Education in India

The collaboration between IIT Madras and Herbalife exemplifies how partnerships between academic institutions and corporates can drive positive change. This initiative goes beyond financial support, embodying a comprehensive model for inclusivity and accessibility in higher education, empowering students from diverse and underserved backgrounds to thrive in the digital economy.

With the rise of data-driven industries, the demand for skilled professionals in data science is at an all-time high. Through this scholarship program, IIT Madras and Herbalife India are paving the way for a more inclusive, skilled, and empowered workforce in India, demonstrating the transformative impact of CSR in bridging educational and economic divides.
