NEW DELHI (India CSR): Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in India has become a powerful tool for driving positive change, bridging the gap between economic growth and social development. In 2024, businesses across various sectors are not only meeting regulatory requirements but are also actively addressing pressing social challenges such as healthcare, education, women’s empowerment, and environmental sustainability. These initiatives aim to uplift local communities and transform lives, making CSR a significant force for societal welfare. Here’s an overview of the top 10 CSR initiatives that are making a remarkable impact in India this year.

1. Tata Steel’s ‘Thousand Schools Project’

The Thousand Schools Programme, initiated by Tata Steel in January 2015, aims to revitalize school education in its operational areas by creating a scalable model of Universalisation of Elementary Education (UEE) within the Right to Education (RTE) framework. Focusing on access, learning, and governance, the programme targets children and youth from tribal communities, benefiting nearly 200,000 children aged 6-16 and 6,000 pre-primary children across Odisha and Jharkhand. Key achievements include the establishment of Child Labour Free Zones, the re-enrollment of 99% of out-of-school children, and the creation of a network of Community Education Resource Centers to enhance educational resources and community involvement.

2. Hindustan Zinc’s ‘Sakhi’ Women Empowerment Program

Hindustan Zinc’s SAKHI initiative has been awarded the ‘Leaders for Social Change’ award by Socio Story Foundation for its significant impact on rural women’s empowerment. Through the SAKHI program, over 27,500 women have been mobilized into Self-Help Groups (SHGs), enhancing their leadership skills, entrepreneurship capabilities, and community involvement. The initiative has established production centers generating substantial revenue and launched the ‘Sakhi Haat’ marketplace, enabling women to showcase and sell their handmade products. Additionally, during the COVID-19 pandemic, SAKHI members provided vital support to their communities, demonstrating their commitment to fostering economic and social empowerment among rural women in South Rajasthan.

3. ITC’s ‘Mission Sunehra Kal’

Through its ‘Mission Sunehra Kal,’ ITC has been promoting sustainable agriculture and rural development. In 2024, ITC has expanded its watershed development projects, positively impacting over 10,000 hectares of land. This initiative not only addresses water scarcity but also improves agricultural productivity, helping farmers increase their income and ensuring food security in drought-prone areas.

4. Mahindra’s ‘Nanhi Kali’ for Girl Child Education

Project Nanhi Kali, launched in 1996 by Anand Mahindra, is a transformative initiative dedicated to empowering underprivileged girls in India to complete 10 years of formal schooling. Recognized as a key contributor to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the project offers academic support through after-school centers, culturally relevant resources, and social initiatives that promote self-belief and resilience. Jointly managed by the K.C. Mahindra Education Trust and Naandi Foundation, Nanhi Kali has positively impacted over 590,000 girls across 15 states, making it India’s largest program focused on girl child education, supported by more than 250 corporate partners.

5. Reliance Foundation’s ‘Healthcare for All’ Program

Reliance Foundation is committed to making quality and affordable healthcare accessible to all in India through its “Health for All” initiative. This integrated model addresses the needs of vulnerable communities with services ranging from preventive to quaternary care, exemplified by the Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital in Mumbai. Major programs, such as the Health Outreach Programme and ASMAN, aim to provide essential medical services and reduce maternal and neonatal mortality. With a focus on community health, Reliance Foundation has touched the lives of over 7.8 million people, ensuring that healthcare is within reach for everyone.

6. Adani Group’s Sustainable Livelihoods Program

The Adani Group’s CSR focus in 2024 is on providing sustainable livelihood options to marginalized communities in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. Through their training centers, the group is offering skill development in various sectors such as farming, tailoring, and carpentry, enabling locals to become self-sufficient. This initiative has helped improve economic conditions and reduce unemployment in several rural areas.

The Adani Foundation’s Sustainable Livelihoods Program aims to enhance and diversify the incomes of grassroots communities by creating a self-sustaining ecosystem. It focuses on on-farm, off-farm, and non-farm initiatives, including natural farming, irrigation, animal husbandry, and support for women-owned enterprises. Through the Adani Saksham skilling program, the Foundation equips youth with essential skills and integrates advanced technologies like Augmented Reality. With 767 Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and a total revenue of Rs 3.73 crore generated, the program emphasizes economic empowerment and sustainable development for local communities.

7. Vedanta’s ‘Nand Ghar’ for Child Welfare

Nand Ghars are transformative centers aimed at advancing the Prime Minister’s vision of eradicating child malnutrition and empowering women through skill development. By establishing over 5,500 Nand Ghars across 14 states, we provide essential resources such as e-learning technologies, solar power, safe drinking water, and sanitation facilities. These centers serve as dual-purpose spaces, offering education and healthcare for children while facilitating entrepreneurship training for women. With a focus on modern infrastructure and integrated services, Nand Ghars significantly enhance learning outcomes for children and provide women with opportunities to start micro-enterprises, positively impacting millions of lives.

8. Wipro’s Digital Literacy Program

Wipro’s CSR initiative in 2024 is focused on bridging the digital divide in rural India. Their Digital Literacy Program provides technology training to students, teachers, and small business owners, enabling them to embrace digital tools and improve their learning and productivity. This initiative is crucial in empowering individuals and communities with digital skills that are necessary in today’s rapidly changing world.

9. Infosys Foundation’s ‘Healthcare and Education for All’

The Infosys Foundation is committed to ensuring accessible education and healthcare for all, particularly for marginalized communities in India. We work to enhance educational opportunities for girls in rural areas, bridging the gap between education and employability through partnerships and innovative programs. Simultaneously, our healthcare initiatives focus on improving maternal and newborn care, leveraging technology to create equitable access to essential health services. By addressing these critical sectors, we aim to empower individuals and foster sustainable growth within communities.

10. HCL Foundation’s ‘Samuday’ Holistic Rural Development Program

Samuday, an initiative by HCL, aims to uplift rural India through a participatory approach that empowers local communities. By encouraging residents to identify their challenges and collaboratively develop solutions, Samuday fosters a sense of ownership and commitment to sustainable development. The program offers professional support to ensure effective implementation, leading to lasting positive changes in rural areas. With a significant presence across 765 villages and impactful outreach to over 600,000 individuals, Samuday is transforming lives through focused efforts in agriculture, education, health, infrastructure, livelihoods, and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH).
